About this deal

Horowitz has none of Christie’s flaws as an author and there are no cardboard cut-out characters, wildly improbable murder methods, or cosy camouflaging of harsh realities of crime and harm here . Engaging, fun banter between Horowitz and Hawthorne, double deception, locked room mystery, multiple suspects that all have a motive, and someone with murder in their eyes. Last time when we spoke for Moonflower Murders , we were also speaking of the third book in his Daniel Hawthorne series. Labelling the book as fiction opens up the possibility for the author to do anything he wants with these people for the sake of the plot - ingenious!

Realising all these permutations had been done, Horowitz began to wonder what would make his series different. At the end of the tenth book, we find out what makes Hawthorne such a difficult and contrary human being. The previous two books have been acknowledged as strenuous attempts to reinvigorate a highly glutted genre by introducing an innovative twist in the narrative procedure where the author himself becomes the protagonist. A Line to Kill is set just before the publication of The Word is Murder (the first in the series) and opens with Hawthorne and Horowitz being invited to speak at a literary festival on the tiny Channel Island of Alderney.

There, Anthony narrates a story which is based on true facts as he experienced it and reveals the persona of Daniel Hawthorne as the man who was able to crack the case. But the hints of other crimes Tempe’s identification uncovers, particularly crimes against children, spur her on to redouble her efforts despite the new M.

Co-authors Nelson DeMille and his son Alex have created interesting characters, though Brodie might be the type that appears more in fiction than in the real world: About to be handcuffed by a pair of armed men, he “suddenly spun around and delivered a ball-busting kick, under the guy’s ballistic vest, and into his non-ballistic balls. The island itself is a small, desolate place and the closed community mentality dictates that everyone is aware of everyone else's business. The antics of the odd couple add up to a romp around an island where even the taxi driver seems a likely candidate for wrongdoing. Like any good mystery, Anthony Horowitz's A Line to Kill has a gripping story, quirky characters who might be devious or might be innocent, a twisty plot, an enigmatic detective and a memorable setting. Islands make for popular settings for whodunits from Agatha Christie’s And Then There were None to PD James’ Skull Beneath the Skin . There were aspects that did take me by surprise, but the overall motives and situation was a little… familiar. Many thanks to Anthony Horowitz and Penguin Books for the chance to read this ARC, courtesy of NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

A Line to Kill is the third installment in the "Hawthorne and Horowitz Mysteries" following The Word is Murder and The Sentence is Death. In a similar manner, this novel provides a glimpse of life on Alderney and Horowitz does not shy away from its horrific history. A somewhat eclectic mix and Horowitz places this motley crew in an isolated location which is itself riven with political tension as a plan to run an electrical power line through the island to connect France and England. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Lo unico es el embalaje, que al tener un pliegue y no estar el libro protegido en el interior algunas hojas llegaron dobladas y es incómodo para manejar, tan fácil como envolver el libro para que no se abra. Alderney is in turmoil over a planned power line that will cut through it, desecrating a war cemetery and turning neighbour against neighbour.

what elevates this series above many if not all of its competitors is Horowitz’s self-deprecating representation of himself in his narration (Watson was a fictionalisation of Doyle) and the relationship between him and Hawthorne, which (in contrast to Watson’s reverence for Holmes) is fraught with friction .When I recognised the Christie-style set-up, I immediately wondered if this was a step too far for Horowitz. Anyway, the partners complement each other: Taylor is the more rational and level-headed, while Brodie blatantly disregards jurisdictional boundaries when he needs to.
