About this deal

According to Henson, the most challenging part of creating the set for The Girl Before was trying to make it obvious that the two women lived in the same house in different time periods. After reading the script and hearing details about the house – which is described as modern and minimalist in the book – Henson began to do extensive research into architects and architecture for the four-part series.

Amber: " Hello Greg. And I call you Greg because we're now social equals." House: " And I call you Cutthroat Bitch because, well, quod erat demonstrandum." ―Don't Ever Change I found the Ghanaian words mixed into the dialogue and broken English difficult to decipher at times, of course, and this interrupted the flow of the story. Conversely, I adored watching the girls’ friendship flourish and learning about Ghanaian culture, food, clothing, customs, and daily life. I was really worried that, because of the stories of the two women running almost in parallel in the same house but three years apart, it would become confusing," said the designer. Henson hoped the house would come across as its own character Hold tells the story of Belinda, a housegirl employed in a big house in Kumasi, Ghana. Belinda enjoys the life she has there, working for ‘Aunty and Uncle’. She has eleven-year old Mary at her side, a young, sassy but lovable girl, whom Belinda has taken under her wing. Although otherwise she seems happy and secure in Daban, and becomes like an elder sister to the other house-girl, 11 year-old Mary. But then a relative of Aunty's arrives from UK, 'Nana', wife of a successful ex-pat businessman Doctor Otuo, and tells Belinda of her own 17 year old daughter, Amma.

Another reviewer had mentioned the same thing (either on Goodreads or on Netgalley), about how the book feels like it was edited for a white audience. I agree with them wholeheartedly on this. As a POC and a WOC myself, I could understand what the other reviewer meant, Housegirl is set in both Ghana and London and is the story of two teen girls facing the life-expanding challenges often associated with “coming of age.” The large windows also served a functional purpose for the film crew: they provided plenty of angles to shoot from. This helped create variety on the shoot, which was important as Henson estimates around 60 per cent of the series is filmed in the house. Large windows helped provide new angles for filming Yesterday had been AS Results Day: Amma and all the other prefects had been garlanded with As. Clutching certificates they did a show of being surprised, relieved. This book was very bizarre. I struggled to get into the book but was intrigued with the characters of Be, Amma and Mary. But honestly how do they connect? We are left with no conclusion to either story apart from Mary. So what exactly is this book about? I have no idea.Forgive. Forgive me coming in your personal and private chat, but. Well, why you carry on like every little thing has to have answer? Maybe is fine fine to sometimes only have the questions, and leave there? There is so very much I do not know or understand. But is not causing me a rage and a heartbreaking. If someone just tell you answer, or, or even you are clever enough to work out the answer for yourself and get it, then bam: is finished. You have your answer and no more guessing and thinking. What is the use if all is finished and completed and there is nothing else left to do?" Housegirl is a story of female friendship, coming-of-age, and claiming one’s identity. It is slower-moving, but a worthwhile effort overall due to immersive culture and well-drawn characters. The team found an existing plot of land on which to build the facade of the house as seen in the series, though the interiors were shot at Bottle Yard Studios.

As at now, I'll give this book a 1 star rating. But because I can't finish it, I will not rate the novel. News about our Dezeen Awards programme, including entry deadlines and announcements. Plus occasional updates. Dezeen Events GuideThere were some fairly generic Ghana-London comparisons - for example between the tiny houses of the London middle class contrasted with the vast houses in Ghana; and the pressure in Ghana of social appearances. There is the earnestness and hard work of Ghanaians to make the most of meagre resources contrasted with the frivolity of Londoners squandering their advantages. But this is not really adding much to our knowledge of the world. Hold is the debut novel from Michael Donkor and has just been published by Fourth Estate. Moving between Ghana and London, Hold is described as ‘an intimate, moving, powerful coming-of-age novel’, telling the story of Belinda, a young Ghanaian who finds herself living in London, so utterly different from her life as a housegirl in Ghana. Belinda originally came from a village where life was very different indeed. She had quite a harsh childhood and witnessed some activities that no child should ever be exposed to. Aunty and Uncle have looked after Belinda in recent years and she trusts that this adventure they are encouraging her to take is for the best. But growing up is the same for all I feel. We all have to battle against preconceptions handed down from elders. Its the way things change, we batter against their rules and change the world. Hold has a really striking cover which would light up any bookcase or coffee table and it is a book I really wanted to love. It was another of my recent holiday reads but it has taken me until now to process a review, as I found it difficult to unscramble my thoughts into a few coherent sentences without sounding a little over-critical in my words.
