Proanthocyanidins (PACS) which are naturally occurring powerful antioxidants extracted from the North American cranberry. Type A PACs have an anti-adhesion affect, this means they help to reduce the ability of certain bacteria to attach to the bladder lining. Improvement in digestion– probiotics have been shown to increase the efficiency of digestion and therefore provide an improvement in digestion. Mannan-oligosaccharide (MOS) - created from purified yeast cell walls, MOS is commonly used as a prebiotic to support intestinal microflora. N-acetyl D-glucosamine is a precursor to Chondroitin sulphate and Keratin sulphate which make up the Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer that lines and protects the sensitive bladder urothelium. A strong, resilient GAG layer prevents bacteria from adhering to the urothelial cells. Pain relief. Cystitis in dogs can be very painful. Often vets will prescribe an anti-inflammatory pain killer to help manage the pain. Sometimes stronger painkillers, by injection, are required.

For removal of large urinary stones or those which don’t respond well to dietary treatment, cystotomy surgery may be required. Often animals will recover within 1-2 weeks. Some blood may be seen in the urine for the first week following surgery. The stones will be sent away for analysis so a longer-term plan can be made for your dog’s treatment. Dogs are examined in a free consultation at Animal Trust where the vet will carry out a physical examination to detect a fever, painful or enlarged bladder or kidneys. Following this, urinalysis is carried out by testing a fresh urine sample for acidity, blood, infection, sugar, concentration and crystals.
