About this deal

I added the moss by super glueing it to the wood (see the bog wood wall blog for how this is done but its soooo easy!).

Frankly as I look at it now especially compared to all the scapes on here - it was rubbish!!...but it was a start. There are two ways to combat this problem. The first is to invest in an aquarium heater that has advanced electronics for the temperature control. The problem is that most heaters in this category do not fit in the pump section of the Spec. The Eheim Jager is a great example of one that does offer better reliability and control, but unfortunately does not quite fit in the Spec V. It’s really easy to clean and maintain and due to its size water changes and filter cleans only take around 15 minutes. If you have hardwood floors or hardwood stairs in place but they are in bad condition, don’t fret! One of our consultant associate companies, Plancher NewLook, gave us advice on how to deal with saving the existing hardwood stairs. Their recommendation was to get everything out the room before the aquarium is installed, so that the hardwoods on the stairs can be sandblasted. You can also do the entire hardwood floor surface area if you have the budget. The end result is a shiny, new-looking space that provides a great home for any aquarium. For specific brands, I have found a handful of aquarium heaters that I know fit the Fluval Spec V. Note that the pump section in the Spec V is a bit smaller than the Spec III, so it is somewhat harder to get a heater to fit in the larger capacity aquarium. Three that I know fit are:Then add a fish. I don't need many...probably only 1 or 2. The tank is small and I don't want to overload it anyway. I just want something swimming to look at other than shrimp. Less fish also means (hopefully) less fry get eaten too. In short, the heater goes wherever you can fit it and will probably be different from model to model. I came to the above pump orientation because it led to a nice spot for the heater – wedged in between the center wall and the outlet tube. I have detailed pictures of the heater installed in my Hydor Theo Aquarium Heater review. How to Remove the Pump from a Spec Aquarium N30 provides expertise in the construction of large acrylic aquariums, such as those in Underwater World (Resort World Sentosa). We supply customised storage tanks to fish farms such as Qian Hu, and to major restaurants. The N30 brand name is trusted for quality workmanship in the industry.

Ultimately it's your choice. I feel the Fluval is worth the price, as most things in this hobby tend to be. Then added the pants where there is soil and added moss to the wood using super glue – Yes it really works! The Hydor Theo 50 watt is what I use in our Spec V. It has been very good, used in conjunction with my Temperature Controller. There is another that will fit in the taller Spec III (but will not fit in the smaller pump section of the Spec V): After messing around with the pump in several rotations, I don’t think it matters much if the pump is oriented with the inlet pointed toward a wall instead of the filter section. There is no need to modify the tank to disperse heat. The Fluval heater will fit in the compartment with the return pump, and therefore the return pump will draw the warmed water into the tank. If you poke holes in your return compartment, you are going to draw water in through those holes because of the suction of the return pump and you'll be bypassing the filter. For a betta, that tank is just fine the way it is, and very well designed. A disadvantage to both the DIY temperature controller and a reefkeeper type controller is that they take up space outside your aquarium. I have dealt with this by putting everything into a storage box to hide it. The pump sits next to the filter in an empty chamber and I have to confess I'm twitchy about it. I've had bad experiences with pumps of this nature, so the proof will be in the long-term pudding.

Our review will cover setting up the tank, some tips to get it running well, possible design ideas, and general maintenance of the aquarium. Whats in the box?

Option 1: Fitting a Heater in the Fluval Spec Pump Section

Yep, its definitely a struggle! I actually read through your thread before making this post and was going to message you if I found a good one! Hopefully this can help us both The Fluval Spec 19 Litre Aquarium in white also comes with Carbon media and Biomax rings (3 stage filtration) Having said that, I still wholly recommend utilizing a good temperature controller. Most aquarium controllers can also be paired with fan to provide cooling control. It adds peace of mind and greater consistancy for temperature making your fish and inverts healthy. The Fluval Spec is an excellent value Nano tank that can be used for tropical or cold water fish (Although tropical looks better). Again this would be planted around to make a better look than just the sand but you should get an idea from these layouts.

If after a last minute Christmas gift, or a first time tank with a little versatility, this is the one to ask Santa for. Do I sense a wave of these new, longer-shaped tanks hitting the market? I hope so because I love them. This tank has just become my latest project, but what I'm doing with it is top secret — for now.

What Wattage of Aquarium Heater do I Need for my Spec?

If you want to run this as a tropical tank you’ll need a heater – The recommended one for the tank is the Fluval Edge 25w Heater – Buy it here. Some stats on the latest version of this tank This aquarium would make an ideal last-minute Christmas gift, says Nathan Hill - and he's not giving his up without a fight! This screws into the end section where the filter is really easily, just slip it over and the tighten it up to secure in place. As a general rule, the 5 gallon Spec V aquarium can have either a 25 watt or a 50 watt. I use a 50 watt and it certainly does not need more heating power. I think a 25 watt would have sufficed as well for our home. It also opens up a whole new dimension in small tank aquascaping and layout. It's 43.5cm/17" long, by 27cm/6.7" high and 16cm/6.3" wide, with a volume of 19 l/4 gal, so hopefully it'll be taken a bit more seriously than other nano tanks which have had more than their fair share of detractors.
