About this deal

In my opinion, the live footage of “Electricity” on the beach at the Cannes festival 1968 is one of the most awesome “music videos” of all time. Stunned, Beefheart pointed at the vacuum cleaner and uttered the immortal words, “This machine sucks” before disappearing into the desert to pursue his true vocation. The Decal/Repertoire (from the same source, but apparently not identical) is taken from a decent tape transfer and/or a really good needle drop, and sounds good when re-EQed. Almost lost in this hodge-podge are a few absolute gems, probably topped by a live-in-the-radio-studio acoustic duet rendition of “Orange Claw Hammer” with Zappa on acoustic guitar.

After I bought my Canadian SAM CD, I started seeing other Beefheart SAM versions/configurations in the form of CD/cassette albums/compilations. The Trout Mask instrumentals and the Odd Jobs and Evening Bell demos are big highlights of this collection for me and Korn Ring Finger (my favorite “out-take” from the Mirror Man/It Comes To You In A Plain Brown Wrapper sessions) was only available on CD on this collection before Buddha put it out as a bonus track on the 1999 CD re-issue of Safe As Milk.

The rest of disc 4 is a set of video clips which are, again, mostly of passing interest to megafans- they're interesting in that they're the only footage we have of these lineups performing live, but the performances themselves aren't necessarily exceptional (and neither is the sound quality). Partial exercise of any right under these Terms of Sale will not preclude any further or other exercise of that right or any other right under these Terms of Sale. However, this may not have occurred in early issues [some of which may have been over-stickered accordingly] and the poster may have appeared in the 2nd volume. I'm not sure he made enough albums during his lifetime for an ABA but I'd love to see someone tackle the post-1983 releases.

If you bid on a Lot, including by telephone and online bidding, or by placing a commission bid, we assume that you have carefully inspected the Lot and satisfied yourself regarding its condition and authenticity. Manic versions of standards like „Rollin’ n’ Tumblin’“ are here, as well as some Mirror Man-era pieces. If any court or relevant authority decides that any of them are unlawful, the remaining clauses will remain in full force and effect. Find out in these two articles: Resurrection Shuffle by Byron Coley and The Weirdest, Coolest Reissue Label In The World by Mark Coleman. But this is not a “Best of” collection nor is it a gathering of “odds and sods” for diehard completists, although the first of the 5 discs gathers several extremely rare early recordings. One thing about Safe, “Autumn’s Child” always sounded like a penultimate track to me, and somewhat limp as a finish.

Each volume of the vinyl edition contains the same libretto printed in different colours – useful for anyone who only wants one or two of the volumes. To enable personalized advertising (like interest-based ads), we may share your data with our marketing and advertising partners using cookies and other technologies. And buried in the middle of this looong CD, you get the most stunning record of the whole box set, which is the Captain performing „Orange Claw Hammer“ with Frank Zappa on acoustic guitar for the radio. You must also satisfy any security arrangements we have in place before entering the auction room to view or bid.

The sound quality is mostly murky (but the swampy approach lets you accept that), and the band’s playing is basic but they rock hard and fierce. What we have here then is a box set which contains enough to make it essential for the fan – both from a historical (CD1 and CD5) and a musical (CD1 and CD5… and partly CD2 and even 3) perspective. If you do not pay for or collect the Lot within this time period, you will be responsible for any reasonable removal, storage and insurance charges in relation to that Lot. Information about Beefheart was hard to find back in those days with only the public or College libraries being the only source for me to find anything about Beefheart/Magic Band. All 3 of these vinyl volumes were eventually rolled out on the combined labels of 'Xeric' and 'Table Of The Elements'.
