When I first became aware of Inland Empire, way back upon its release in 2006, I was excited not because it was the new film from David Lynch (I was young and naive) but because the film had been shot on Sony PD-150 cameras – the very same cameras that I had access to at University. One of the biggest misses in the supplements is that the restoration wasn’t covered, but the booklet at least features a section that details it. This barely passes for high-definition as it is, so a presentation in full 4K resolution isn’t going to be much better (the notes also mention that Lynch intentionally went for a finished product that was less noticeably “4K-looking”). Criterion then ports over from the previous DVD 75 minutes’ worth of deleted scenes, entitled More Things That Happened. Over the course of the three hour running time you get used to it, of course, but it all feels part of the parcel of what Inland Empire represents, which is arguably David Lynch’s most obtuse, experimental and difficult feature. Featuring a revelatory performance from Laura Dern as an actress who starts to adopt the persona of her character in a film, Inland Empire is a strange and terrifying descent into the unknown. Barney’s book David Lynch: Interviews, featuring the filmmaker talking about the experience of making the film, right down to editing all of that footage.The PD-150 was generally used by low budget news crews, self shooters and, yes, film students with Hollywood pretensions. The film concludes the journey with samadhi, nirvana, enlightenment, a spiritual awakening being realised, where the grand illusion is seen once and for all, with no true separation and oneness, with suffering, even being seen as ultimately unreal (ego death). Expectations need to be set appropriately as the news around the film going through some algorithm to upscale it to 4K may lead to unreasonable hopes that this presentation is never going to satisfy, and based on the disappointment expressed by some in online circles around Criterion’s decision to forego a 4K UHD, it sounds as though expectations were a bit high. When she finds herself falling for her co-star, she realises her life is starting to mimic the fictional film they're shooting. Laura Dern, stretched on the rack of being a crazy auteur’s favourite go-to girl (a scouringly fearless performance, or performances), shows up in a variety of personae; it’s symptomatic of Lynch’s sensibility that we’re never sure how many.Filmed over the same period Lynch was shooting material for Inland Empire, the documentary aims to provide a portrait of the filmmaker and show his working process.
