Even though Angel is the fourth book in the DCI Ryan Mystery series, it is actually the first one that I have read.I was thrilled the book ventured into Durham region also which is where I currently live and it was a little strange to have the cemetery where my grandparents are buried featured in the novel, but LJ Ross has captured the essence of the region really well (again! If you have not read the previous books, I don’t think it is a problem, so it would work as a stand alone. I remember the old bus station in Worswick Street but I never realised there was a church opposite until it was one of the settings in Angel.

Angel is the hotly anticipated fourth book in the series and whilst you absolutely could read it as a stand-a-lone, you really don't want to miss out on the other books in the series. You can’t help but wonder if Mackenzie herself will end up as a potential victim as she starts to receive threats and also shares the only common connection with the murdered women.As usual the beautiful setting of Northumberland acts as a picturesque contrast to the dark and disturbing crimes committed here. I felt as if I was there, a passive character watching what was happening, but I didn't want to be there in the dark, wet streets or in the spooky cemeteries in close proximity to this vicious killer. When a man is found dead at the remote church of Heavenfield, DCI Ryan is the only other person for miles around.

The characters and the story line had my attention through out, so much so that I seemed to be hurtling towards the ending well before I wanted to as I was enjoying it so much. A serial killer is on a mission, performing God's work (as far as he's concerned), killing redheaded women and dumping their bodies in local cemeteries, arranging their bodies as if they were angels in flight. A few days before Christmas, his peace is shattered and he is thrust back into the murky world of murder when a young woman is found dead amongst the ancient ruins of the nearby Priory. I am reading a set of these books, and they are a very good read, and I have visited most of the places mentioned in the titles of this set.I have to say, this series get better and better with each book, which is one hell of an accomplishment since the first one was so amazing.
