It already weighs 5 kg empty, so if you fill it, I’m pretty sure it will be too heavy for most airlines’ 23 kg luggage allowance. We previously had a more budget-friendly set but after 10 years of use the handles are starting to break on them so they’ve been relegated to the attic to be used as storage containers. Upon first glance I was impressed with the sleek, matte colourway and the addition of a fillable suitcase divider to keep the bulk of my clothes flat was a nice surprise when initially zipping open the case. From backpacks of various shapes and sizes, to duffel bags and rolling cases, I have the bag for every type and duration of trip – whether it be for an expedition to Antarctica, three months backpacking in Guatemala, or a city break in Palma de Mallorca.

In the airport the case rolled like a dream, but it wasn't the flat, glossy airport floors I was worried about. To help with pulling and steering, each case also has a handle which smoothly pops in and out at the push of a button. Another difference to note is the fact that the Stamford suitcases have double buttons on the handle compressors. There are hundreds of luggage companies out there, and many of them are good, so to avoid spiralling down a rabbit hole of comparisons and indecision, it was just easiest to stick with a brand I know and trust.There are times when I’ll need to open my case and get things out and, as it doesn’t have any exterior pockets, I’d have to open up the entire suitcase which can be annoying and possibly embarrassing in the middle of the airport. After using a cheap hardshell case for my two-week trip to Sri Lanka last year (a last-minute emergency purchase), only to have the wheels break en route back to the UK, I can confirm that a polycarbonate hard shell is not enough: all other parts of the case need to be strong, too! That said, the peace of mind that I gained having a protective hard shell in my arsenal was invaluable. Our Clifton medium suitcase comes with a dust bag, and each size nests inside the next one up for easy storage. I think they’re so stylish in taupe and blush, but I’d go for darker colours if you’re a frequent traveller and don’t want to spend too much time cleaning your cases. It features a one-button handle collapser which was arguably my favourite feature, because it meant that I didn't have to struggle getting it onto the security belt, into or out of the taxi at the other end.
