About this deal
Of all the themes in board gaming, one of the most popular to emerge in the past few years is undoubtedly that of the Lovecraftian world of Cthulhu and his demonic/fish creature minions. That said, I found us spending these more out of necessity than strategy, because the encounter phase especially is so chaotic, and you really need more cards for higher levels. The discarded Leadership tokens are moved from the Sled Board to the Leadership Token discard area on the board.
The group then coordinates and tries to put the right number of cards into the pot so that they meet the tile's goal. In some ways the game makes me think of Dead of Winter, The Thing Infection at Outpost 31 and Werewolf, just without the traitor aspects. Each card is a different piece of equipment and includes flavor text from the game’s source material. You see, you don't merely tally up your madness with points, or get cards that provide simple modifiers. A number of Injury Cards are drawn from the deck equal to the number of players and placed in the Equipment discard stack. While so many other Lovecraftian games ( Eldritch Horror, Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition) invent thrilling adventure and craft stories of survival, none of them capture the threads of insanity that H. I'd definitely house rule this and have madness apply at all times to increase the fun factor for sure. Leadership tokens are a limited currency used to earn additional communication time, rerolling the penalty die, and resting.
Thing is that you’d be surprised at how quickly you’ll be discarding them, especially if you have some inexperienced players. Ultimately, the goal of the game is to get off the mountain with as many relics, and as few wounds, as possible. I also like how that everyone is working towards the same goal, collecting relics and escaping from the mountain. This game takes the idea behind just one of his stories, At the Mountains of Madness, and turns it into a sort of social deduction game. This may be an accident that causes the Leader to draw 2 Injury cards and add them to the Equipment card discard pile.I kind of wish there had been a bit more art on each of these, even though it does feel right already. As you climb higher up the mountain, you will notice that the iconography is not consistent with colors, shapes, or text changing. If there are no more tokens on the Sled board, then the Leader places one of the Leadership tokens from the discard area on the board, back into the box.
