This 8-part German drama showed on up Sky recently and, looking for something new to start, we gave it a try. Daniel Mandelkorn is an anthropologist, working as a journalist, who is sent by his editor and partner to interview Svensson, the reclusive author of a popular children's book. Each postcard, depicting a vista Daniel has seen or a place he has visited, contains one paragraph that ends abruptly, only to be continued on the next card. At some point Mandelkern says something like “some people move forward from the past while others dwell in its ruins.

Over the years we have been touched by the many different ways people have given their pets a final farewell including Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist and other non-religious services that have taken place in our grounds. It's a novel with 2 narrators - Dirk Svensson, a reclusive children's book author de jour living on Lake Lugano, and Daniel Mandelkern, who travels there to interview him for a newspaper assignment given to him by his wife/boss. After parking my expectations, the book then grabbed me by the jugular as I recognized it as a treatise on the workings of the heart and mind.

It comes as a disappointment to learn that the most exciting German-language novel published in English this spring is so lightly rooted in the particularities of the German intellectual landscape, but Funeral for a Dog is strong enough to banish such regrets. The word celebration does not seem appropriate, but Dirk Svensson does need to mark this passage in a significant way that will also pay some homage to Felix.
