About this deal

On one or two instances, my ultrawide snaps took on a weird sickly yellow hue compared to the cooler tone of the main sensor. Sony, a company renowned for its innovation and high-quality products, has brought forth two remarkable contenders: the Sony Xperia 5 V and the Sony Xperia 10 V.

Xperia 10 V review - What Hi-Fi? Sony Xperia 10 V review - What Hi-Fi?

Now a year on, we have the Xperia 10 V, a modest upgrade over last year’s model, but an upgrade nonetheless. The Sony Xperia 10 V is another well-built, block-shaped plastic phone that aims for solid practicality above all else, with a little video playback special sauce drizzled on top. Sure, you might be able to squeeze an extra social post in before having to scroll again, but is it worth the constant inconveniences? This makes it well suited to widescreen movie playback, though most video content still subscribes to the 16:9 aspect ratio. Once again, not a lot has changed going from the Xperia 10 IV and even the 10 III to the new Xperia 10 V. Sony’s choice of 6GB of RAM is ample, so that’s not the issue here, and you get a solid 128GB of internal storage, too. When he's not on the road attending launch events, you can usually find him scouring the web for the latest news, to feed Stuff readers' insatiable appetite for tech. The Xperia 10 V, meanwhile, opts for a triple-lens system with a 48MP main camera, an 8MP telephoto lens and an 8MP ultra-wide lens.

Xperia 1 V vs Sony Xperia 10 V: What’s the difference? Sony Xperia 1 V vs Sony Xperia 10 V: What’s the difference?

Compared to the Pixel 7a in particular, with its snappy 90Hz display and flagship-grade Tensor G2 chip, the Xperia 10 V simply doesn’t feel like it’s fighting in the same weight class. Its Exynos 1380 chipset, while far from a powerhouse, is a bit more potent than the Snapdragon 695 inside the Xperia. In practice, it's very hard to make this feature work consistently, and most people would probably just turn it off after a couple of hits and misses. It is an overall excellent and quite popular midranger that just so happens to offer some of the same extras as the Xperia 10 V, like stereo speakers and IP67 ingress protection. Hook it up overnight on that second sleep and you’ll have no problems if you’re prone to forgetting to top-up when you’re in the shower or at your desk.

Unfortunately, the Xperia 10 V just isn’t able to deliver a consistently smooth experience in general use. Starting with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on Disney Plus, the Sony’s OLED panel immediately shows its strengths, offering convincing, deep blacks combined with excellent contrast that creates a stunning display of space permeated with plenty of pinpoint stars. Despite the hectic camera movements and lots of fast-moving subjects on screen, the Xperia refrains from stuttering and motion remains smooth and cinematic. As we’ve already established, Sony has upgraded the budget Xperia to include a stereo speaker set-up like its more expensive siblings, and it's a worthy upgrade. If you are someone who might fancy any of those, then we'd say the Xperia 10 V is worth a (cautious) recommendation. The Sony Xperia 10 V has exactly the same key strengths and weaknesses as the Xperia 10 IV did last year.
