In spite of the lower light level, I gave it 5 stars for the length of burn time, lack of wax mess, and the fact that it worked as designed. Finally, unlike battery lanterns or liquid or gas fuel types, UCO candle lanterns don’t need rechargeable battery maintenance charges.

Clearly you have to act appropriately around it and not bash into it, but from our perspective it was safe.You calculate that you’ll need 5 hours of lighting per day for a potential blackout lasting 10 days. I can probably still use the original lantern, but it won’t have the wind protection of the missing glass. It is straightforward with taper candles because all you have to do is save the wax as it drips off.

I had never heard of these lanterns before the very nice people at Prepare For Adventure asked if they could send us one for use when we camped during our West Highland Way charity hike. This one is easier to light than my older model as the glass chimney can be slid down then slid back up after lighting. It is a bit more difficult with jar candles and tea lights because you must remove the old wax from the jar/holder. I didn’t touch the top of the lantern directly over the wick, knowing it will be hot because there is a fire under it, but did lift and carry the lantern with the attached metal handle without getting burned… could feel the heat from the flame but not enough to burn me.For use in Original Candle Lantern, Original Candle Lantern Plus LED, and Candlelier Candle Lanterns. As of now the only issue with this new lantern is the candle sight on the side does not line up correctly with the view slot (see photo) but you can still see the candle. Many modern light sources rely on batteries, which have a tendency to suffer with colder temperatures, reducing the charge, and therefore reducing lighting times in cold environments. I would use it in a pinch when camping if I didn’t want to use my white gas or propane fueled Coleman lantern. This is the best candle lantern for those who need more light and are happy with the larger physical size.

Safe, Reliable Lighting: Emergency lantern candle holder features a spring-loaded base for a steady burn. I guess they have to bleach the wax to get that color, which means there is a slight odor to the candles.
