In addition to love and family, a third major theme here is Christianity, particularly the Catholic version. Due stelle per la trama, quattro per lo stile narrativo, ben reso anche dalla traduzione: in medio stat virtus, sicché tre stelline. I couldn't recommend it as it explores so many aspects of life that I found distasteful to read about - prostitution, clairvoyance, adultery, homosexuality. Colleen McCulloch’s Angel is an odd mixture of fantasy, the supernatural, coming of age and social history. You'll never see man, woman or child in need of help go ignored out here, yet in the city those same people who dote on their pets will completely ignore a cry of help from a human being. I've read a few books by Colleen McCullough before and got a found memory of her works most of the time.

History and politics are there also: two world wars, the Depression, the Great Drought that ended when WWII ended, everything from clothing to attitudes to cars, as well as changing Australian slang, attitudes, the quirks - most of it slipping in unobtrusively, at other times pivotal to the plot. A total hoot, but also a much deeper read if you are open to an aspect of life known as 'spiritual' (and I don't mean religious). A sweeping, romantic epic that spans nearly sixty years, The Thorn Birds became an international best-seller; the novel was adapted for the screen as an incredibly popular mini-series in 1983.

I think I'll stick to The Poisonwood Bible and Gone with the Wind and The Legend of the Fire Horse Woman for my family epics. Each character is so beautifully rendered, as if they were indeed living people whose memories were captured by a light, non-judgemental hand. It's filled with drama, tabu themes, forbidden love, angst, secrets, love, family, marriage, illness, death, loyalty, money, religion, sex, - heartbreaking and affirmative. Harriet quickly learns that Mrs Delvecchio Schwartz not only runs a rooming house, but also does other things on the side for more income, such as reading tarot cards and staring into her crystal ball.and Harriet comes to love her as if Flo were her own - and must protect her at all costs when tragedy strikes . Justine and her brother remain close, although he is often shocked at her sexual adventures and free-wheeling lifestyle.
