About this deal

Having read all of Purcell's previous Gothic novels, I was very excited for the opportunity to read a digital ARC of her latest offering via NetGalley.

Book Review: The Shape of Darkness reinforces Laura Purcell

Set in the Victorian era, with strong female roles and dark, gothic scenes, The Shape Of Darkness is sure to please. And if you’re looking for something spooky and chilling, but not “now I have to sleep with all the lights on” scary, this could be the book for you.Agnes must choose which features to include and highlight to create a person’s resemblance, an early warning to the reader that her narration – like so many of Purcell’s narrators – may be somewhat suspect in what it chooses to include or leave out. There are séance scenes that’ll make you want to pull the covers up a little tighter and otherworldly encounters that’ll have you peering warily into dark corners of the house, convinced you can see shapes in the shadows.

BOOK OF THE WEEK - PressReader

Agnes make a silhouettes but with the rise of the photography her business is failing and when the people she captures in shadow begin to die she endeavours to find the cause be it earthly or otherwise. Pearl and her sister make their living through mesmerism and holding seances, however nothing is quite as it seems in their household, and secrets emerge as the story moves forward. If the two of them can contact the victims and find out who the murderer is, perhaps they can stop another death from occurring. The Shape of Darkness delivers all the elements her fans have come to expect: women in difficult situations, a sideways look at the restrictions and strictures of their society, a creeping supernatural menace and a final – jaw-dropping – twist.

Darkness can be attached to an object and the sphere then moves centered on that object, it can be temporarily blocked be covering that object with another (opaque) object.Creating atmosphere is her forte and all her books are pervaded by a creeping menace, darkness and paranoia. This book is everything that you would expect from Laura Purcell, the gothic and shadowy setting in Bath, a chilling plot, unnerving characters with secrets, and a creeping sense of dread. One with the Land: While melded to the earth, the vampire takes on a preternatural awareness of people, creatures, things, and events across the domain. While the book’s ending was somewhat ambiguous (it posits several potential answers and leaves the reader to decide which is real) it was for the most part logical to the story, barring one slightly cliched element which I wish had been omitted.
