About this deal

After experiencing several tragedies in his life he spent a lot of time trying to figure out who God is and with the encouragement of his wife wrote this novel as a gift to his children. This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress did for his. All of the characterization of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit and their interactions with each other felt off to me. Investigators discover that a serial killer who targets young girls—nicknamed the Little Ladykiller—has kidnapped her, and they trace his trail to an abandoned shack deep in the wilderness. This is usually a prerequisite for me to rate a book so highly, but at times--not all the time--I could take it or leave it.

Many people are and that's fantastic, but this book was so stupid that I have hopes that any well informed, well read, reasonable Christian would have asked themselves 'What the fuck did I just read?Four years later, in this midst of his great sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. In one conversation between Mack and Papa, Mack explains his belief that the miracles of Jesus are evidence of His deity. Assisted by Wayne Jacobsen and Brad Cummings in the process of editing and rewriting, Young attempted many times to find a commercial publisher before the group decided to form their own company, Windblown Media, and publish the book themselves. As they walk, the snow disappears and suddenly the path and woods are beautiful and warm, the sun shines, and the wilderness looks more like summer than winter. Although Papa offers Mack the chance to stay with them if he wants, he chooses to go back to his family.

I can suspend disbelief in books about zombies, vampires, genius eleven year old girls, chimera, reasonable Republicans (okay, that one was difficult) but I couldn't do it with this book, or other books like it, because these books have a agenda to make you believe in the stuff they are writing about and that makes my stomach turn. He arrives and initially finds nothing, but as he is leaving, the shack and its surroundings are supernaturally transformed into a lush and inviting scene. In what ways do you think we are all tempted to act as judges- both of other people, and of God himself? After multiple rejections by publishers, Young and his friends published the book under the name of their newly created publishing company. The friend from whom he borrowed the SUV tells him he never reached the shack, having crashed on the way there. After walking across the lake, they get back on land, Jesus points out a path for Mack to follow and will wait for him there.

Against his better judgment, he arrives on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. He then meets a “small, distinctively Asian woman,” named Sarayu, and a Middle Eastern laborer, who is obviously Jesus (83). The Shack was written by a Christian father for his children, to help them understand his relationship with God. The next morning, Papa, now appearing as a man with a silver ponytail, shakes Mack awake and makes him breakfast. I could point out that in this book 'God' is a black woman, Jesus is a middle eastern Jew with a big nose (Mac believed he was supposed to be good looking. There they find a ladybug pin that matches a signature left by a serial killer known as “Little Ladykiller. The author’s view of Christ confuses the natures and undermines the uniqueness of the hypostatic union.
