About this deal

Slightly Foxed introduces its readers to books that are no longer new and fashionable but have lasting appeal. By day Kay Harker is under the eye of his governess, but at night he escapes into a world where good and evil are pitted against each other. Hilder’s black and white illustrations, from the 1930s, hark back to the era of 19th century boys’ adventure stories. But not all the creatures that haunt the night are friendly: a coven of witches is also after the treasure, led by the scheming Abner Brown and the sinister Mrs Pouncer, and woe betide anyone who gets in their way.

Character Overlap: Abner Brown previously appeared as a henchman of the villain (also a black magician) in Sard Harker. Epilogue: Though not marked off as an epilogue (the book has no chapter divisions), the last couple of pages consist of a series of descriptions of what happened to various characters afterward. We are invited to empathize with Benjamin the highwayman – ‘a slight, quick man, with a nice face,’ Ellen has heard, ‘nothing bad in it, only bold’ – and the horse shot from beneath him in the final desperate chase, and with Bitem the fox, who also knows a thing or two about being hunted.Your Size May Vary: The relative sizes of Kay and the various Midnight Folk is never nailed down, and seems to vary according to convenience. S. Lewis’s Narnia tales and Joan Aiken’s Wolves of Willoughby Chase—not to mention the Harry Potter series— The Midnight Folk is a wonderful and enthralling contribution to the great English tradition of children’s literature, beloved by adults and children alike.

Abner Brown is the principal villain in both novels, but plays a more prominent role in The Box of Delights. Roper Bilges the gamekeeper shares the name of his grandfather, one of the mutineers on Captain Harker's ship. In The Midnight Folk, Kay's great-grandfather is endowed with a great treasure there; in other novels the actual nature of the seafaring Harker's relationship to Kay is less clear.Masefield has written the sort of book that grown-up people like to give a child for Christmas, and then enjoy reading for themselves. Summoning Ritual: Mrs Pouncer uses one to summon various supernatural entities, to ask them where the treasure might be. Black Knight: On the way to meet King Arthur, Kay, the unnamed messenger and Sir Launcelot encounter a supernatural Black Knight who treats beheading as a minor setback. The subsequent history of the treasure turns out to involve several more mutinies and maroonings with the same motivation. He was sent to live with an aunt and uncle who didn’t understand him and don’t seem to have liked him much either.John Masefield’s classic children’s book is considered to be one of the great works of modern children’s fiction.

The success of his second book was followed by the publication of several long narrative poems, including Dauber (1914) and Reynard the Fox (1919). It is as if a lost boy had conjured his longed-for childhood back to life through sheer force of imagination. The two Kay Harker books, The Midnight Folk (1927) and The Box of Delights (1935), are Masefield’s lasting contribution to children’s fantasy literature.
