About this deal

In recent years several other shows have dipped their toes in the intrusive thought and compulsive response cycle without even realising it at all. This is a short, skimmable work that focuses on violent/highly inappropriate intrusive thoughts which clients struggle with obsessively and regarding morals. The diagnostic differentiation and assessment of risk can require considerable clinical skill and circumspection, and Dr. Some intrusive thoughts sound totally irrational: “Just a glance at the wagging tail was enough to start the bad thoughts—he felt compelled to stare at the dog’s anus and his thoughts would start,” and, “[S]he thinks about how easy it would be to throw her defenseless Jessie against a wall and smash her skull. Some people have thoughts of stabbing their babies, or driving off the road and killing themselves (or others), or even some of the sexual nature, such as rape.

Baer describes several cases of the types of thoughts that torment OCD sufferers, but seen from the outside, his examples may lack the necessary impact to explain the suffering. Still, I think it would be very hard for an intrusive thought to force you to commit suicide against your will. But the OCD pleads the brain for further investigation, because these uncontrollable and impossible-to-ignore intrusive thoughts seem to hint at something terrible. In fact, many of the one illness also have the other, about 75% of those with Tourette's have clinical OCD, and ~25% the other way. It goes into exposure therapy, cognitive behavior treatments and when all else fails psycho-pharmacology and how drugs can help with the process. As someone who has struggled with obsessive thoughts for as long as I can remember, it was amazing to read this book.

It’s no wonder we still think OCD is a neatness illness – it

Most people who are thinking about committing suicide, know that they want to commit suicide on some level. Every human being is visited from time to time by the Imp of the Perverse, who makes you think the most inappropriate thoughts at the most appropriate times.

This book is very informative on the subject of OCD and intrusive bad thoughts, it talks about ways you could adapt to overcome it, and in the end, chapters if all else fails it also talks bout medication you can take. Considerable space is given to descriptions of exposure therapy and cognitive therapy, including plans for graded self-directed exposure to triggering circumstances. Baer was the first to bring international attention to the particularly painful problem of taboo obsessions in OCD, with the publication of his book “The Imp of the Mind”, which is used in bibliotherapy for this problem around the world.
