About this deal

Due to the easy nature of the rhyming words, I feel young children up to the age of six/seven would benefit from this book. In the 2019 TVNZ series Goodnight Kiwi the prime minister Jacinda Ardern read Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy; the episode aired on TVNZ 2 on Christmas Day.

There are plenty to discover, and just like Hairy Maclary, they all feature Lynely's uniquely exuberant artwork and gorgeously readable rhymes! She began to work as a freelance illustrator and collaborated with author Eve Sutton on My Cat Likes To Hide in Boxes. The text is written in rhythmic verse that flows easily with simple rhymes like "Bottomley Potts covered in spots, Hercules Morse as big as a horse". For example, the noise made by a stranded cat and the excited dogs who discover it is described as a "cacophony". However, the story ends with Schnitzel chasing a cat and the last page shows us that this ‘remarkable’ little dog, has managed to climb a tree.

The books have a wide format that enables a child seated beside an adult to have a full view of the picture page while the adult reads. It comes as no surprise that, as a child, she adored Dr Seuss because of his 'crazy sounds and the fact that he took such liberties with the English language.

Another great book from LD, this time about the mischievous Schnitzel von Krumm, who we are always told, can't climb trees, but gets into so much mischief throughout the story that eventually, if he wants to catch the cat, he's going to have to climb a tree. X-man loves dropping food for them from his high chair - so I suspect that Schnitzel Von Krumm will become a favourite character. Hairy is always bumptious and bustly, but a confrontation with Scarface Claw will send him straight back home to bed. With his large bright eyes, long legs, finely boned thin frame and snaky tail, he is definitely part greyhound. When Schnitzel disrupts his family’s holiday packing they forget to put something very important in the car .

The animals in this series, unlike the creatures of Beatrix Potter's stories, are not given human thoughts and motives, their actions tell the stories, and reflect their animal natures. Other favourite authors included A A Milne and the fairy tales of The Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen. Her stories are known for their lively sound qualities, curious animal characters, and the memorable illustrations that accompany the text. This time, Schnitzel von Krumm - with the very low tum - is up to mischief, chasing, digging, hiding and hustling. The plots are simple, keeping with the comprehension-level of the age group for which they are written. We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' continuous connection to Country, waters, skies and communities. After all a relative of ours has three naughty minature daschunds who regularly make it onto the kitchen bench via a dining chair and the dining table. Bitzer Maloney is the only other member of Hairy Maclary‘s gang that, like Hairy Maclary, is of mixed-breed parentage. Schnitzel von Krumm gets underfoot during his family's holiday packing and they accidentally leave him behind!

Hairy Maclary's adventures are usually in the company of his other dog friends who include the Dachshund Schnitzel von Krumm, the Dalmatian Bottomley Potts, the Greyhound Bitzer Maloney, the English Mastiff Hercules Morse and the Old English Sheepdog Muffin McLay. The pictures and the written words together tell the story, and the illustrations and their meanings are as important as the text. Schnitzel von Krumm is the star of several of his own adventures as well as appearing in Hairy Maclary's. Lynley Dodd graduated from the Elam School of Art in Auckland with a diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture. However, the illustration shows he has accumulated a number of household items such as cushions and a potted plant, while leaving a lovely trail of muddy paw prints on the carpet.Close observation is encouraged by the inclusion in many of the pictures of a tiny glimpse of the dog who has been named on the previous page, as it approaches or walks out of the picture, showing only the point of a nose or the tip of a tail. We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. In 2015, a sculpture of Hairy Maclary and other characters from the books was officially unveiled in Tauranga on the waterfront by former prime minister John Key. There is a segment of text which appears frequently and reads, “He can hustle and tease with the greatest of ease, but everyone knows that dogs NEVER climb trees.
