About this deal

Darkly decadent SPANISH TEMPRANILLO GRAPES AND PRECIOUS ESSENCE OF CACAO COME TOGETHER TO CREATE A taste experience TO SURPRISE AND DELIGHT THE SENSES. The fortified red wine is finally blended with chocolate essences and the producers of Rubis seem to have got the recipe just right! Rubis also has some lovely dessert recipes to make using the wine such as Tiramisu and Poached pears. This addition of alcohol stops fermentation whilst there is still a high sugar content leaving a natural sweetness in the wine.

The big, bold red, meticulously matched with something smooth and sweet makes the ultimate, divine dessert. Rubis can be served at either room temperature or chilled over ice for that ultimate chocolate experience. If you are feeling naughty then why not drizzle it over ice-cream to bring a new element to your desert. The wine is made in the usual way: grapes are harvested, pressed and fermented and then the wine is “fortified” with a neutral alcohol spirit (a very basic grape brandy). Cacao was not easy to source near Court as it grew in the south amongst the Mayan lowlands and because of this, the drink was usually served to people of high society standing such as Nobles or Warriors and presented at the end of Banquets. Before the person was sacrificed, they were given cacao drinks mixed with human blood to prepare them as an offering to the Gods.

And Morrisons' reckons the sweet wine tastes just like "Christmas in a cup", adding that it's perfect for cosy winter nights. In Religious ceremonies, hundreds of thousands of people a year were sacrificed and to be brave enough to put yourself forward for this was considered an honour. The beans were ground and often mixed with water, chillies, honey or spices and fermented into cacao wine. The palate is quite complex and has more red fruit and rich, dark, chocolate flavours with is a touch of spice at the back of the palate. It can also be used as a cooking ingredient and could be substituted for Port or Sherry in recipes – I can imagine it in a chocolate trifle of some sort.Super indulgent and versatile, this easy to make, rich chocolate cake is perfect to adapt for many occasions, birthdays, family celebrations or baked as a lovely treat to serve with a coffee.
