About this deal

Novak announces that he will commit a major crime within the year, and will allow Glass Eye Press to publish his memoirs after the crime has been committed. The judges for this year’s prize are Tom Lee, Maddie Mortimer, Helen Oyeyemi and Ellen Peirson-Hagger.

In this extraordinary technical feat, Richard Milward plunges us into the dizzying landscape of 1960’s London with the story of Raymond Novak, an anarchist promising to commit the crime of the century, and the publishers hoping to capitalize on his violence. At first his publisher’s footnotes clear up a few phrases and seem to be a voice of reason but then everything bleeds together and it becomes another story entirely. Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately from the article and its talk page, especially if potentially libelous. Novak’s Polari is rooted in Polari as it was spoken in the 60s but it’s by no means a watertight time capsule. Richard has just been shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize and we're delighted to be collaborating on this Special Edition t-shirt.

A lot of the Beats were aiming to transcend poverty or find bliss outside the material stranglehold of modern America. Sentence by sentence, I want to create a kind of rush in the reader, whether that’s through humour, or something unsettling, or an unusual turn of phrase, or the rhythm of the words. He believes himself to be in love with Eve, who is an attractive and promiscuous hard drinker and drug user. Does the novel’s linguistic and structural complexity explain why it’s been so long since your last book?It is narrated in the first person by several characters (including a butterfly), but mainly by Adam and Eve, two school students. In the lead-up to the announcement of the Goldsmiths Prize 2023, Richard was interviewed in the New Statesman by Ellen Peirson-Hagger, judge and assistant culture editor.
