Interestingly, the biggest addition to the Skylanders formula isn't the vehicles - it's the online play. A series of books in the Skylanders franchise started with Skylanders: The Machine of Doom that takes place before the events of Spyro's Adventure. As of 2016, over 300 million toys have been sold and the franchise has become the 11th biggest console franchise of all time.

The main developers of the Skylanders series is Toys For Bob, who developed Spyro's Adventure and Giants. Online races, however, can be played against the wider Skylanders community, though not many people seem to be partaking in it right now, as wait times between matches can last several minutes. This new character creator is borne from the many letters and sketches sent to developer Toys for Bob, by young fans demanding designs with a more personal touch, and the creation tools on offer are a robust and rewarding result of this audience feedback.

Using their magical powers and machinery, the Skylanders defended their world for generations with the help of the Portal Masters. Luckily, though, the business model doesn't sully enjoyment of the game too much, as Skylanders: Imaginators is a generous package out of the box, even without the content available outside of starter packs. Stick one of your traps in the special slot on the portal, and you'll get a temporary weapon boost for your vehicle based on the trap's element. The characters, but not their vehicles, which were made exclusively for the game, also function as amiibo figures.

Skylanders: Trap Team received "generally favorable" reviews for most platforms according to Metacritic; [32] [33] [34] [31] the iOS version received "universal acclaim". You can run the game's numerous vehicles through a variety of land, air, and sea-based tracks, engage in single races or tournaments, and even compete online against friends and strangers.
