I’m sure this simple and quick read will stay with you long after you close the final page, especially if you are young. The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis Archived December 27, 2013, at the Wayback Machine, The Literate Mother. The Breadwinner, also known as Parvana, [1] is a children's novel by Deborah Ellis, [2] first published in 2001. From these interviews, she wrote The Breadwinner series, which includes The Breadwinner (2001), a book about a girl named Parvana, [3] [4] Parvana's Journey (2002), its sequel, [5] Mud City (2003), about Shauzia, Parvana's best friend, [6] and My Name is Parvana (2011), the fourth book in the series.

These books help us understand how rough life really is for some children around the world, like the character Parvana and her sisters and brother who are constantly going through tragedy and hardship. We would like to acknowledge and pay our respects to the Murramurang people, the traditional owners and custodians of this land. This installment was just as good as the first for me and it’s hard for me to choose between the two for a favourite! Throughout the book, Parvana grows closer to her older sister Nooria as well as the woman who appears in the window of a building close to where Parvana works.

A beautiful mix of childlike innocence and harsh tragedy, this book was very special and wonderful to read. Profile of Deborah Ellis Archived February 15, 2009, at the Wayback Machine, University of Manitoba. The fifth book in Ellis's Breadwinner series, One More Mountain was published by Groundwood books in 2022, takes up Parvana's story as the Americans are leaving Afghanistan and the Taliban are regaining control in Kabul. The sequel, Sacred Leaf, is about Diego's time with the Ricardos (a family who helped Diego) and a giant coca leaf protest. I would recommend this trilogy to any young reader, in fact I think it is an important piece that all preteens should have on their shelves.Shauzia, who had been planning to run away from her family so that she would not have to marry, tells Parvana that she will also be leaving with some nomads. The biggest change Parvana experiences in the book creates a solution that literally saves her family from starvation.
