During the project the dams were strengthened, the lakes refilled, paths reinstated, and a small cascade rebuilt to work once again – a long-lost original feature. Some 2km to the north-east, Sham Castle (1762, listed grade II*) was built as an eyecatcher from Allen's town house in Bath. The idea is to provide a liberated experience akin to wild camping, with more privacy than a campsite, but with the reassurance of knowing permission to be there has been arranged in advance. The Dutch Garden is a wide open charming and meticulously designed space that beckons visitors with its formal elegance.

The first frost usually happens in early November, ending the growing season and finishing the floral displays. The surviving historic landscape comprises some 22ha, and is divided between former parkland, now playing fields, to the south of the house, and the steeply sloping combe to the north, which runs down from the house to three fishponds in Widcombe at the northern extremity of the landscape. With over 40 pre-1920s varieties, it is aldo planted with bulbs, annuals and herbaceous perennials to create a display that lasts from spring to autumn.Naturally, the opening ceremonies included a band of spoon players… Who created the Spoonbridge and Cherry? Follow the path that goes east at the main gates, keeping the Walled Garden on your right, until you reach the woodland. Over the years, we’ve brought tons of visitors to the sculpture gardens to see one of Minneapolis’s most iconic attractions – the Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture. On the south side of the playing fields, 250m south of the house is the Gymnasium (c 1830-40, listed grade II*).

The decked area now has one of those egg-shaped swing seats on it – somewhere she can sit and read a book. Some 600m north-north-west, at the junction of Ralph Allen Drive and Church Street in Widcombe (outside the area here registered), is a second lodge by Wood (pre 1742, listed grade II) and gate piers (C18, listed grade II), which related to Ralph Allen Drive before it was made a public highway. And I have to say, on a recent trip, I was absolutely blown away with how beautiful the gardens are becoming. In what’s set to be another bumper year for UK accommodation providers, all these services are sure to be a valuable extra resource to mine for that elusive holiday availability. There are also some different grasses, including Carex testacea and Carex ‘Evergold’, the fern Dryopteris affinis, and Muehlenbeckia.Some of the utility rooms now serve as a museum and display an extensive collection of gardening tools. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll through Holland Park, pass through Kensington Gardens, and eventually reach the iconic Hyde Park. The gardens surrounding a French-style ‘chateau’ known as Palau de les Heures (Ivy Palace) thanks to the creeping ivy all around. However at present, after the tremendous transformation, the stage was rebuilt as an Amphitheater for concerts to accommodate a large volume of population and significantly the fountain was demolished and a breathtaking rose garden was built with seats around it.
