Metaxa 5 Stars begins life as a double-pot stilled 5-year old brandy blend of Savatiano, Soultanina, and Black Corinth grapes.

The Metaxa Brandy Collection Star rating represents the minimum number of years the spirit has aged in the barrel. The legend of Metaxa is that of Spyros Metaxa, a man with a taste for the finer things in life, born into a family of silk merchants. This stunning Private Reserve is blended from the finest brandies, Muscats, and botanicals that have reached their peak in both aroma and taste.The only thing you really need to know about Metaxa brandy labels is that the amount of stars on the label indicates how long it has been aged. It was created In 1992 skillfully bringing together special blends of aged grape distillates and Muscat wines from Samos.

Getting any of the type of Metaxa is going to cost you, as is made partially from some of the originally barreled Mextaxa wine.The palate is silkily smooth but with a distinct, leathery, even oily texture to the smoothness upon which dark fruits, cocoa and fresh orange are spread, bound together with caramel and honey. As a brandy, Metaxa combines local Greek wines from islands in the Aegean Sea with wine distillates that have been aging for as long as 80 years in some types. The blend is then aged for a further year in oak barrels, cold-filtered and bottled, ready to delight its new owner. On Samos, an island in the eastern Aegean Sea, grapes, primarily Muscat, a variety originally from Greece, are cultivated in terraces and hand-picked.

Metaxa 7 Stars takes it up a notch with a sweeter honeyed note, and the 12 Stars offer a light hint of citrus. You’ll see under “types of Metaxa” that there are generally just a few differently aged wines, but this is important if you know which tastes you enjoy and which you don’t enjoy. Construction of a distillery began immediately with the building conveniently situated in the Athenean port of Piraeus. Don’t judge (and let’s hope Metaxa does not find out), but I found this works incredibly well as high-class brandy and coke. Leathery, oily even, on the tongue, the Metaxa Private Reserve is full of indulgent dark chocolate, honey and fresh orange.This mix of old and new wines brings together the aged aroma and the freshness of newer wine to make a refreshing blend that is bottled and sold.
