About this deal

Maturin is described as a small, quiet, "ugly" man who is known to cast a "dangerous, pale, reptilian eye" towards his enemies. It follows the young Jack Aubrey, a Royal Navy lieutenant who has just been promoted to the rank of Master and Commander, effectively a captain and Stephen Maturin, a destitute physician and naturalist whom Aubrey appoints as his naval surgeon. And while Moby-Dick deliberately immersed readers in the argot and arcana of seafaring, it did so with a mind toward total immersion, a replication in the reader's imagination of the daily life of the whaler that makes the book what it is. Most casual observers might think it odd that kids were on the ship, and, even more, strange that they had commanding roles and fought in engagements, but this was absolutely spot on in the movie.

This is the second onscreen collaboration for Crowe and Bettany, who previously co-starred in 2001’s A Beautiful Mind. However, only ten days of the filming took place at sea aboard Rose (a reproduction of the 18th-century post ship HMS Rose). Master and Commander is the first book in Patrick O’Brian’s wonderful 21-book historical fiction series known as the “Aubrey-Maturin Series. The 2003 Peter Weir film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany, uses some of the characters, dialogue and events from the Aubrey–Maturin series, but does not faithfully reproduce the plot of the books. The site's critics consensus states: "Russell Crowe's rough charm is put to good use in this masterful adaptation of Patrick O'Brian's novel.

He will be its Master and Commander…not yet a Post Captain, eligible to command larger vessels, but it will do for now. I don't need to know why the Top Chef contestants are grabbing this spice rather than that one, or how they learned to use one of those fancy canisters that makes everything into foam. The character of Maturin is likewise of O'Brian's devising, [1] though it has been said that the author's own personality, attitudes, interests and even appearance are closely reflected in his character's persona. If you want a Master and Commander sequel I suggest you e-mail Tom Rothman at Fox and let him know your thoughts".
