Pomp and Circumstance, he thought, contained "shamefully sloppy animation" but is saved by Donald's comical gags, but pointed out Rhapsody in Blue, with its "strong lines and vivid, flat colours that are fashionably retro", and the "classic Disneyesque. At the end, the orchestra replays the slow introduction to the Rite, which does not happen in the original work. Though it was not exactly known how to achieve their goal, engineers at Disney and RCA investigated many ideas and tests made with various equipment setups.

Disney considered releasing a multi-disc 78-rpm record album of Fantasia's soundtrack in conjunction with the film's 1940 roadshow release, but this idea was not realized.

Realizing the idea would not work, he kept three Fantasia segments— The Sorcerer's Apprentice, The Nutcracker Suite, and Dance of the Hours—in the program for "quite a while". In November 1992, Disney, Schumacher, Levine, Gelb, and Butoy met in Vienna to discuss a collection of story reels developed, one of them being Pines of Rome, which Levine took an immediate liking to. It features a variety of dances, just as in the original, but danced by animated fairies, fish, flowers, mushrooms, and leaves; no actual nutcracker is ever seen in this version. Fantasia 2000 premiered on December 17, 1999, at Carnegie Hall in New York City as part of a concert tour that also visited London, Paris, Tokyo, and Pasadena, California. The Goldbergs and their team visited the zoo in Los Angeles and San Diego to study the anatomy and movement of flamingos.

Hahn came up with the set and backgrounds while eating lunch; he proceeded to sketch a rough idea of what he imagined on a napkin. Olin Downes of The New York Times too hailed the sound quality that Fantasound presented but felt that "much of Fantasia distracted from or directly injured the scores. On January 18, 1939, Stokowski signed an eighteen-month contract with Disney to conduct the remaining pieces with the Philadelphia Orchestra. This was the birth of a new concept, a group of separate numbers—regardless of their running time—put together in a single presentation. The animators' preliminary designs depicted a Greco-Roman setting; one of the staff members described the artwork as "an appalling abuse" of the characters.Development paused until the commercial success of the 1991 home video release of Fantasia convinced Eisner that there was enough public interest and funds for a sequel, to which he assigned Disney as executive producer. An alternate version of this segment with a jazzier version of Korsakov's composition by Freddy Martin was eventually used in Disney's 1948 animated feature film Melody Time, as the Bumble Boogie segment. With no input from Disney, musical director Ed Plumb and Ben Sharpsteen reduced Fantasia first to an hour and forty minutes, then to an hour and twenty minutes by removing most of Taylor's commentary and the Toccata and Fugue segment. There were also a few negative reactions that were more political in nature, especially since the film's release happened when Nazi Germany reigned supreme in Europe. It originated in 1995 when director and animator Eric Goldberg approached Al Hirschfeld about the idea of an animated short set to Gershwin's composition in the style of Hirschfeld's illustrations.
