Briggs's portrayal of his parents as they succeed, or fail, in coming to terms with their rapidly shifting world is irresistably engaging -- full of sympathy and affection, yet clear-eyed and unsentimental. Like so many of his characters, Briggs’s grumpiness never quite managed to conceal an underlying warmth and kindness. They want children and it takes them some time to have their first and the doctor tells them they will have to stop there.

B: quite a common book but usually turns up surface soiled due to it consisting of a mostly white and unvarnished dustjacket. For me it was like a dream come true - I was just so hoping it would reflect his original comic book artwork and it did. Raymond Briggs’s illustrations for his 1978 book The Snowman, which was adapted into a film in 1982. Many of Briggs’s books were successfully adapted for film and other media: Channel 4’s 1982 animated film version of The Snowman, with its familiar theme song Walking in the Air, became a staple of Christmas Day TV. This was such a short and sweet book and I enjoyed every aspect of it from the storyline, the illustrations and how grateful we are as human beings when parents try and make the life of their children better than what they went through.Briggs says: "[The couple are] somewhat like my parents but I like to think my parents weren't quite as dim as they are. This couple isn't famous or wealthy or anything too out of the ordinary, they just have to keep on getting by whilst the wars happen and technology changes and politics shifts all around them. As well as working on a very personal and biographical level, 'Ethel and Ernest' provides a fascinating version of British history through the lens of Briggs' parents lives. Immaginatevi una vita con piccole e grandi soddisfazioni (una vasca da bagno tutta per loro, un giardino, un figlio che si diploma) e con piccole e grandi paure (il figlio che si iscrive alla scuola d’arte - che futuro potrà mai avere?
