About this deal

The key differences between the Kodak Ultra F9 and the Kodak Ektar H35 are that one of them is a half-frame camera and the other is a full-frame camera. The Kodak Ektar H35 half from camera can use any color or black and white film between ISO 200 and 400. I’ve been shooting film for 7 years or so and over that time I’ve learned what makes a good camera and what makes a bad one. If we are to trust those measurements, there should be no grain visible on 4x6” prints made from 135-size Ektar rolls; 8x10” prints will show no grain when made from medium format Ektar rolls, and there will be no grain on 16x20” prints made from large format sheets.

You can now use the Kodak Ektar H35N to take slow flash sync photos because opening the bulb shutter fires the flash, and you can continue to hold the shutter open as long as you like. The company says that the half frame design of the camera makes it a great tool to tell a story through two consecutive frames. You’ll get used to knowing when to use your flash, but it’ll save you from a lot of underexposed shots!

The battery-sucking flash is likely going to be an annoyance for a lot of people – would some sort of auto shut-off have been so expensive to implement? So the question is, does it do enough to be a tempting option for the thrifty film photographer, or is its half-frame photography cutting one corner too many? And I have to say, despite using an optical-grade acrylic plastic lens (same as glasses), this camera really gives the other half frame cameras a run for their money. I hate to put so much weight on cosmetics, but with a camera like this, a grown man can feel a bit silly carrying one.And so, instead of using the older RMS granularity index, Kodak listed a variety of Print Grain Indexes on its datasheet for Kodak Ektar. The lower resolution and “portrait” orientation make half frame a fun format for photos of people, similar to Fuji Instax Mini film, but of course, you’re free to photograph anything you like. The new H35N wrist-strap is comprised of a classier thin but strong grey “rope” material and much smaller but as effective, black plastic hardware for adjusting the tightness of the strap.

Kodak Ektar H35N Half Frame Camera Review: More Sharpness

The Ektar H35 is built for all photographers who love capturing moments on film, but wish they were able to eek out just a couple extra frames per roll.So long as you’re close to your subjects (but not too close), you’re going to get some amazing photos. In fairness, images made with the right ISO film and in the right conditions (for example, bright sunshine, well-lit places, etc.

This is great for thrifty analogue shooters – but this philosophy of cheapness above all is applied across the camera's design, and some aspects feel a little less robust than we'd like. So, on the heels of the wildly successful 72-photos-per-roll, Kodak Ektar H35, Hong Kong camera maker, RETO, just released an upgraded version of their smash hit half frame point-and-shoot, the H35N. The important thing to know about Print Grain Index is that if it’s 25 or below, there’s no grain to see — the image would appear perfectly smooth. The lens’ optical simplicity and generally low resolving power create an image that’s softer and dreamier than would be achieved with a more advanced film or digital camera. Once you can see the film is winding on, then you’re good to go, close the backup and you can start taking pictures!

The biggest difference is the fact that you can get 72 shots when you’re shooting the Kodak Ektar H35 because it’s a half-frame camera, whereas the Ultra F9 will provide you with the standard 36 shots as a maximum. However, group selfies will require holding the camera on its side to get a horizontal aspect ration, which can be difficult. The H35N features a built-in star filter, bulb function, and tripod mount along with an upgraded lens featuring a coated optic — all upgrades that might be found individually on reusable film cameras but are rare when combined into one body. Don’t get me wrong, you’re under no illusion that you’re shooting a high quality camera but for what it is, the H35 is great.
