About this deal

Readers will certainly come away from the book knowing more about wine and likely eager to explore it further, but even those less inclined to imbibe will be intrigued. I really enjoyed this entertaining, informative and enjoyable book about Bosker's somewhat crazy foray into the world of wine, tasting and sommeliers and her pursuit to become a "cork dork.

Skystis, kurį išgeriame sulyg pirmuoju gurkšniu - ne tas pats, kurio šlaką iš butelio išpilame paskutinį. No spoilers here, but the book ends on a positive note, which I am always welcome to, that self-education can change and improve one's brain even as an adult and therefore, by implication, it is never too late to learn and improve oneself. There is no shortage of informative detail in this book, but Bosker’s writing style makes it a compulsive read. The person I am as a sommelier is not the person I am as Morgan Harris the wine lover,” he told me recently. So, for example, the student must first note and describe the color, then the aroma, then the flavor, and structure of the wine. They say that artists and people are products of their environment - but Bixiga 70 have placed it at the centre of their sound, and their identity, with a fusion of Brazilian, Latin and African influences making a mark on their instrumental music.

One chapter explores the makers of mass-produced wines, who study what people want and give them that, versus wine as it has traditionally been made: by artisans who express what they feel is good (“To consult the drinkers would be like Monet running focus groups to decide the colors for his next canvas. This hilarious, thoughtful and erudite book may be the ultimate answer to the perennial question of whether or not wine connoisseurship is a scam. The resulting book is a delightful blend of science, memoir and encounters with people who are deadly serious about wine. It was recently published on 3/28/17 by Penguin Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House, paperback, 352 pages. But I resist the idea that the best way to get to know wine is to pattern yourself after a sommelier.Bosker believes these manipulated wines can be a starting point for a wine journey, that they can spark curiosity rather than slake it. Bourdain spent his life working his way through the bowels of the restaurant industry and learned to define good food and good chefs along the way. They were, with a reassuring nod or smile, helping to ease the sting of delinquent children or failed deals. Astounded by their fanatical dedication and seemingly superhuman sensory powers, Bosker abandoned her screen-centric life and set out to discover what drove their obsession, and whether she, too, could become a cork dork.

In this delightfully written and keenly observed book, Bianca Bosker helps us becomeconnoisseursnot only of wine but also ofpeoplewhose passions would more aptly be described as obsessions.

It’s a dizzying tale, full of set pieces so vividly rendered you’ll feel like you’re being jostled by a wait staff trying to get around you, like you’re being dressed down by Paul Grieco, owner of Terroir Tribeca, livid that Bosker dared to contradict him in front of a guest.
