This has the added advantage of keeping the pads a few millimetres from the inner surface of the helmet – again adding plenty of space for air to flow. Both are lightweight too, with a size large Abus Airbreaker weighing 230g and a Lazer Genesis in the same size coming in at 250g. The Italian-made helmet uses special tooling, with a unique ‘slider’ construction that only a few premium helmet manufacturers have access to. If you still start burning up on a climb, you can pour water into the grid section at the top/back of the helmet and it'll flow all over your head to cool you down. The Lazer Genesis is a bit more bulbous and its venting isn’t as deep, but it too is a polished performer.

It offers many of the benefits of Abus' own far more expensive options while remaining light, cool and extremely comfortable. But I have been alternating in other ventilated helmets in that time, and the AirBreaker has kept me coolest and best managed my sweat. That resulted in no pressure point anywhere across my forehead, and also almost no indentation in my skin, even when cinching the retention down snugly for multi-hour rides.

There’s not much to gain by having an aero helmet design if the straps are flapping around and generating air resistance.
