She is friends with Pamela, a rough girl who no one else likes, and they both spend large parts of the day in the greenhouse on the roof. Their classmate, Sylvia, a prim and proper girl, is their enemy and constant source of their bullying. Many nights, Sally ends by staring out her window, looking at the train passing by.

Shadowgirls is a webcomic created by David Rodriguez and Dave Reynolds. Hitting every point from horror to action to comedy to Fanservice, Shadowgirls is a unique but excellent work. Sadly, it ended in 2011. Having enjoyed two of Carol Birch’s earlier novels – Orphans of the Carnival and the Booker Prize shortlisted Jamrach’s Menagerie – I decided to try her new book, Shadow Girls. I enjoyed this one too, but it’s a very strange novel and not quite what I’d expected! If You Kill Him You Will Be Just Like Him: Played straight with Paul, who stopped Lin from killing the Bloodwatch member that almost Brainwashed him. What I want is to surpass everything. You after I win the duel, my brother, myself up until now, everything. I found the "aftermath" the cherry on top of this story. It's added the extra something that I didn't realize that this story needed. It was already excellent but this just made it....near perfect. If you haven't heard of the show, basically it's about a girl who met a prince when she was young after her parents died. She was so impressed by this prince that she decides to become a prince herself. She goes to Ohtori academy, and is then drawn into a series of duels with various students to possess "The Rose Bride", who is able to grant the possessor's wishes. That's as much as I'm going to explain.

I don't want to say much more and get into spoiler territory. I think this creepy story with its weird creepy girls in their old creepy school will stay with me for a while. I'll be seeking out more titles by Carol Birch. I used to think that sincerity was valuable...and that it was the one and only way to change the world. But sincerity by itself changes nothing. Without power, one finds themself merely depending on others to live. I've taken enough risks to buy the power to change the world. That's how the world works. Utena and Anthy would have been an unambiguous romantic couple in the series had Be-Papas member Chiho Saito not objected, resulting in an argument between her and Ikuhara. Thankfully, she later changed her mind and retracted any negative statements she may have had towards the pairing. Not so much for the show itself, but Rachael Lillis has admitted that she thought she was miscast as the voice of Utena in the English dub, and also lamented that original ADR director Jim Malone had little knowledge of the show and characters, which heavily affected her performance and the dub's quality. The opening sequence foreshadows some elements from the ending that were scrapped, such as Anthy disappearing instead of Utena as well as the whole armor and horses deal.
