About this deal

Wines range from light to full-bodied. Cabernet sauvignon tends to be at the upper limit, with a higher ABV. However, if you prefer something a little lighter, opt for the likes of pinot noir, which tend to be lighter-bodied and lower in strength. How should I serve red wine?

Zinfandel — sometimes called Primitivo — is a sweet or semi-sweet red wine with a slightly higher alcohol content. It’s the only type of grape thought to be indigenous to America and is grown exclusively in California. It’s a bold, fruit-forward red that’s commonly aged in American oak to bring out its earthy flavors. It can also be made into a rose wine called White Zinfandel. Showcasing historic American grapes like Zinfandel and Merlot, we dove headfirst into varieties that no longer get the love they deserve stateside, and came away with a handful of bottles that will surely change your tune about them. Cheap chianti has a bit of a bad reputation, but there are some real gems among the rough stuff you still find at generic Italian restaurants. This Riserva, for example, is a long-term star in Lidl’s ever-changing range, a wine of soft savouriness and real local character, with sour dark cherry and baking spice.

WINE FOR WHENEVER

Selecting our overall best wine was no easy task but this 2016 Malbec is sure to be a winner no matter who’s pouring it. It’s an incredibly nuanced and detailed wine, promising depth and character from every sip. One of the highest-rated wines, it’s a critic’s favorite and a rich, aromatic bottle to delight family and friends over dinner. At 12.5% it’s more powerful than a lot of natural wines, but the freshness and bright character mean it’s very easy to drink. Another family-owned winery, Heitz Cellar was established in 1961 and has been described as a “master of Grignolino”. Its Cabernet Sauvignon has appeared and placed in several wine-tasting competitions, and the brand is renowned for its iconic, globally celebrated wines. It produced Napa Valley’s first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon and has kept an unwavering commitment to quality ever since it started trading. The winery uses only organically farmed, 100% Napa Valley fruit in its wines and has a focus on sustainability. Its vineyard offers an incredible breadth of diversity and is yet to produce an unsuccessful wine. Best wineries We also continued to explore the diversity of America’s less heralded wine regions, and were consistently impressed by Finger Lakes, Oregon, and particularly, Virginia offerings. Merlots have milder flavors and lower tannin levels than other varieties of red wine. Although still a type of dry red wine, they’re sweeter than Cabernet Sauvignons and are made of dark blue-colored wine grapes. Merlots are a fruit-forward wine with plenty of flavors, with spicy and sweet notes that come from aging in oak barrels. Pinot Grigio:

The best red wines to buy in 2022

There’s no substitute for trying out wines and keeping a note of those you liked and didn’t like. But in the meantime, you can use our guide to the most common varieties to get you started: Sharpham Wine won several medals for its efforts at the Wine GB Awards in 2020, with this fabulously cool 2019 vintage Pinot Noir scooping the Gold. Ripe yet light, it offers classic British wild strawberry flavours, red berries and just a hint of spice that encapsulates the terroir of its South Devon vineyard.

This well-priced and well-structured Pinot Noir is easily up to international standards, and a product of Sharpham’s brand new, state-of-the-art winery, where it spent eight months ageing in French oak barrels. It makes for delicious drinking now, but will also improve with age.

Vintage wines, whereby the wine is made only from grapes of a single year’s harvest then often aged to perfection by the winemaker, cost more than non-vintage wine. Mixing vintages to create a non-vintage means that winemakers can usually produce a cheaper and more uniformly consistent flavour by balancing out any irregularities. If you find a non-vintage you enjoy, it will largely taste the same when you buy it year to year. From the Casablanca Valley, Chile’s original cool-climate coastal wine region. This lively and fresh sauvignon blanc combines grapefruity and limey citrus with elderflower and peapoddy greenness. It’s tighter and dryer than many New Zealand examples, but all the better for it. Riesling is known for its aromatic grape variety that produces wines with an almost floral, perfumed aroma. It’s a white wine that’s sweet and acidic and is used to make dry, semi-sweet, sweet, and sparkling white wines. Riesling is one of the top white grapes in the world and is Germany’s flagship wine. Sauvignon Blanc: All wines on this list have been tasted and reviewed by VinePair’s tasting panel. We compiled an exhaustive list of our favorite wines this year, then whittled it down to 50 based on quality, value, and availability in the U.S.
