George Gene Gustines (July 14, 2008). "A Comic Book Superhero Is Headed to Small Screens– NYTimes.com". NYTimes/com. Archived from the original on July 5, 2015 . Retrieved May 3, 2015. Mark Grayson is a seemingly average teen that dreams of being a superhero. He's the son of the hero Omni-Man and he fears he'll never get his powers. One day he's at work and it finally happens... This book collects issues #1-#47 (or, volumes #1-#9 if you prefer) of the seminal superhero comic Invincible. There's an incredible amount of story collected here (see below the spoiler break for a brief synopsis) but suffice to say that this is a fantastic graphic novel with gorgeous art and addictive, enthralling writing. The comic tells the story of a teenage boy named Mark Grayson. It is a similar coming of age type of story to that of Spider-man. He is half Korean and half Viltrumite on his father’s side, which causes him to inherit his fathers superpowers. The series follows him balancing school and his new powers with help from his Father, Omni Man. Omni Man is kind of similar to Superman he can fly, has super strength and he’s indestructible. One thing I noticed throughout reading this book is it pokes fun at Marvel/DC and some characters almost feel like Walmart versions of those franchises. In this series there are people known as Guardians of the Globe who are similar to the Avengers/Justice League. There’s even a character named Red Rush who looks like the Flash. And Darknight who reminded me of Batman. Aside from the superhero parodies I thought it was a really fun read. If you continue on in the series you’ll find it’s really unique and has it’s own plot line to tell despite all the parodies. Especially if you read until the twist ending. It was engaging and I love a good superhero/coming of age style story. It’s probably why I like Spider-man and Superman: Son of Kal-El so much. Invincible (Compendium One) is a grounded, vivid, and at times graphically violent young adult’s coming-of-age story that juggles the young hero’s everyday life with superhero duties requiring him to save the world.

Angstrom Levy: A genius with the ability to leap across dimensions and is one of Invicible's archenemies. After being disfigured by one of his inventions, he blames Invincible and swears revenge. If you've never read Invincible, this is a great way to start. It's the first 9 trades plus a couple of odds and ends. I would recommend reading this digitally because a physical copy is going to be ridiculously hefty to lug around. This is my second time through the series if that gives you any indication of how much I enjoyed it. I read the original trades and used these compendiums as an excuse to read it again. There were many times I found myself laughing out loud. Kirkman has a very fun way with how he writes. All of his characters were relatable, and there wasn't one issue I read that I didn't like, so kudos to you Rob!! Thaedus: A peaceful member of the Viltrumites and founder of the Coalition of Planets. He was responsible for killing Emperor Argall enough to plunge Viltrum in a civil war where the weaker Viltrumites were killed. Afterwards, Thaedus went on to establish the Coalition of Planets.. Thaedus is later killed by Thragg during the Viltrumite War.

These series have been long out of print, but will be collected in the compendium format as Invincible Universe. So far, only one collection has been announced: Global Defense Agency: A government organization that the Guardians of the Globe and other superheroes work for. I’ve read plenty of superhero comics from the likes of DC and Marvel, but I’ve have heard about this superhero series from “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman. I went in with solid expectations and came out astounded. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg to Adapt Robert Kirkman Comic 'Invincible' for Universal (Exclusive)". The Hollywood Reporter. April 4, 2017. Comics

Invincible begins as your standard teenage superhero story. Invincible's dad is basically the Superman of this world. Mark's been waiting for the last few years to get his powers. When he does, it's the typical Spider-Man type story until the story twists on its heels around issue 10. Kirkman's focus is on character driven moments as Mark grows into being a superhero. That's what makes this series. Plus, Kirkman really knows how to drop those mind blowing cliffhangers. Those of you who have read The Walking Dead will know what I'm talking about. The Guardians of the Globe: A superhero team. Most of the original incarnation was brutally killed by Omni-Man causing another incarnation to be formed.
