These template modes rotate and spin the phone through different clips and are effective for creating fast content, and they’re also, surprisingly, a lot of fun. After years of buying different stabilizers—starting with KenLab gyros, then a full Steadicam rig, followed by many motorized gimbals—I have finally found a combination that does everything I want at a price that makes it almost disposable. But this is no toy. There is a slight downside to this design, however, which is that the maximum range of motion in the Y-axis is slightly more limited than the old-fashioned gimbal arm design. In 99% of cases, you won’t be nearing those limits, but it’s worth pointing out. Specs and Phone Compatibility WeightUsability: the product is easy to use once I figured it out. I have some complications reaching the buttons without adjusting my hands. This could cause a problem, but the stabilization helps a lot. I learned how to use with both hands for fluid footage. The app makes this thing super accessible to everyone. It makes the usability much higher in my opinion. I’ve not tried anything else, so this is my only frame of reference. The iSteady X offers a high payload capacity and a design that works with the latest oversize smartphones that have the most powerful cameras. Its offset motor/arm keeps the gimbal out of the way from the ultra-wide-angle lenses found on the latest phones, a design trait it shares with the pricier DJI Osmo Mobile 3 (also a great stabilizer). The offset arm design on the iSteady X doesn’t just help it fold up, but ensures that the gimbal pivots don’t end up in the frame. The job of any mobile gimbal stabiliser is to smooth your handheld footage, effectively removing camera shake.

Once done, the camera phone can be clamped in place. In position, you can see the clearance given to the lens by the gimbal design. Somewhat counterintuitively, the record button takes a photo when you press it once. To actually start or stop recording video, you need to press it twice. Pressing it three times will switch between your phone’s front and rear camera.At present, countless mobile gimbal stabilisers will do this, so to stand out, Hohem the manufacture of the iSteady X has had to do something unique. While the stabilisation is generally good, there were a few moments where the motors are slow to respond, and even putting the response speed too fast doesn’t correct this. Setting the gimbal up with my phone for the first time is where I ran into my first issue, although it’s not really an uncommon issue. I’m using the OnePlus 7 Pro, which is a fairly large phone (although, I suppose quite normal by today’s standards).

Powering on and connecting the app on the iPhone 11 Pro to the Hohem iSteady X and everything is straightforward. The connection is fast and works, and after an auto-calibration, everything’s ready to go; I’d say about 2-3 minutes for the complete initial set-up. One inclusion in the box that I do quite like is the wrist strap. It helps to minimise the risk of the gimbal slipping out your hands and crashing onto the floor below (taking your phone with it), and also lets you carry the gimbal while keeping your actual hand free when needed, too.The calibration process takes around 30 seconds and the LED lights on the front panel of the gimbal will stay flashing until the process is complete. I’d recommend placing the gimbal on a flat surface using the included tripod to balance it properly. Controlling The iSteady X One issue with other mobile gimbals is that the gimbal can appear in the footage when switching to the wide-angle lenses. Here Hohem has ensured that even when switched to wide the footage is nice and clear. Setting up the iSteady X is relatively straightforward. Simply mount your phone by placing it in the clamp, pair with your phone via Bluetooth, and start the auto-calibration procedure from within the Hohem Pro app.

If you’re a social media content creator who often generally shoots what’s in front of you rather than using the selfie-camera (although it can do that, too), especially if you do it in vertical mode, then this could be the ideal smartphone gimbal for you, as long as you don’t want to use filters or 3rd party lenses on your smartphone. Without the filter attached, it balances just fine, even with such a large phone. I can even keep my 17-52mm thread adapter attached so I don’t lose it. If you are using the Hohem Pro app, though, you get some pretty neat shooting modes. The Hohem Pro App & Shooting Modes The different shooting modes all seem to work quite well, with the exception of the “Fantastic Rotation” for which I don’t really get the point. The Dolly Zoom is cool, but I don’t think it’s a feature that many will use regularly. Perhaps you’ll give it a try because you’ve never done it before, but then forget the feature’s even there.This is a common issue on some phone and gimbal combinations, so it’s nice that I didn’t encounter anything getting in the way of the shot across the three phones I tested the gimbal with. The original iSteady Mobile is where Hohem’s success story began and Hohem made small improvements to the winning formula in 2019. The result was the Hohem iSteady Mobile Plus which looks almost identical but has a rear trigger and improved battery life. It’s worth noting that part of that set-up is to register a user account through the app. As DJI and most other companies now insist on this, I wasn’t too worried. First and foremost is the vertical movement (tilt); you’ll see this displayed in the sample footage.
