In our general detection test, the Gold Digger missed only one item. Likewise, in the depth test and underwater test this detector failed to locate only one item per test. This Gold Digger is therefore very reliable when it comes to locating treasures – both above ground as well as underground and underwater. Detectors with manual calibration allow the user to adjust their ground balancing setting as they choose. Even with the price of this machine, it seems Garrett has not cut corners with comfort, the padding and grip are very comfortable. The ACE 250 is a VLF detector. VLF, or very low frequency, technology is an easy-to-use and good for finding most metals without any issues. Inside that elliptical search coil, there are actually two separate coils. One is a transmitter while the other is a receiver. A particularly useful feature is the memory mode, where you can ‘show’ the MT-XR detector a certain type of metal, a silver ring, for example, and it will only search for that type of metal composition. This can help limit time wasted uncovering items that aren’t of interest to you.

Firstly, a search coil of around 22 – 27 cm (9 – 11”) is ideal for beginners. This will detect to a good depth without being too expensive. It’s excellent that Garrett puts as much effort into their cheaper metal detectors. As far as I can tell the materials are the same as the more expensive Garrett 250. Constant signals that yield nothing lead to boredom and a toy metal detector that ends up in the shed, and then the tip. The coil is elliptical (oval) measuring 6.5 x 9 inches so it can fit between objects easier than a full circle coil. I pushed it between logs and beneath benches fairly easily. The instructions say you can upgrade this coil should you want to. Double-D coils have an excellent range of coverage but cannot read objects buried very deep. Concentric coils, on the other hand, do not have as good of a range, but read buried objects better. Spider coils are the most consistent of all coil shapes and can be used amid bushes and grass.
