About this deal

On the EOS 80D, Canon has improved AF response whether shooting using the eye level viewfinder, or the alternative of the LCD screen when the camera is switched to Live View mode. Matching the EOS 77D we’re putting it up against here, the 80D offers its users 45 AF points, which are again all cross type. The Canon 80D lineup has always competed relatively closely with Nikon’s D7000 lineup, sharing many specifications and features. That’s just as true against the newer D7200 and D7500 cameras. I bought the 80D as it uses the same batteries and lenses as my 5D3. I got the flat 24mm f/2.8 and the new Sigma Zoom 17-300mm which seemed like the single lens solution for my travels. Time will tell. Like the 70D, the 80D’s viewfinder displays a camera-level indicator to avoid skewed horizons. Instead of 98% coverage, it now displays 100% of the frame with 0.95x magnification. In the past, full viewfinder coverage has been exclusive to the more expensive premium models, so it’s great to see this finally filtering down to more affordable enthusiast DSLRs. Beneath the viewfinder, you’ll find a vari-angle 3in, 1.04-million-dot touch-sensitive display that is identical to the 70D’s.

Like both the 77D and its 70D forebear, the 80D uses Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, which means that its phase detection points are on the imaging sensor itself. And, because autofocusing isn’t always desirable when shooting video, the speed of the 80D’s system can be cleverly varied over seven steps for slower/less jarring focus changes. In use, the AF system doesn’t disappoint either, achieving a sharp focus on static objects in a split second while keeping faster moving objects equally crisp, even in lower light. Eyelevel pentamirror single lens reflex viewfinder offering 100% frame coverage; vari-angle 3-inch LCD with 1,040,000 dots resolution Once again, on the EOS 80D we get bog standard Full HD video rather than a more exciting and up-to-date 4K resolution. However, it does boast an external microphone port with the ability for volume to be manually adjusted in camera, while ‘movies’ can be shot in a choice of MOV or MP4 format. On top of this, Canon’s Video Snapshot feature is to hand to help anyone create more dynamic short films in-camera. Canon 77D vs 80D: burst shooting (fps) The 80D shown with PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter connected to the EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM kit zoom. This adapter allows for smooth zooming at variable speeds.

Sassan2012, I have a Sony a6300 and a Canon 80D. In my experience with both I wouldn't choose the Sony as superior to the Canon. There are several situations in which the Canon is better like focusing in low light, the skin colors in the Canon pictures are more natural (better than Nikon too), when the picture is taken with areas with a significant range of light intensity the Canon has more latitude (I am not using HDR). The Canon 80D sits near the top of a large number of entry-level DSLRs that Canon makes. It has a 1.6x aps-c crop sensor, the same size as that found on Canon Rebel cameras and Canon’s more advanced 7D series. The EOS 77D features a new-at-the-time 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor, which utilises Canon’s on-chip analogue-to-digital conversion technology, as seen on the likes of the distinctly more grown up EOS 5D Mark IV. On paper, this produces cleaner images at higher ISOs compared to the older sensor in the manufacturer’s own 750D and 760D.

The EOS 77D offers the ability to shoot up to Full HD quality video clips of less than 30 minutes maximum duration alongside still images. There’s no 4K video option here then, which may be a disappointment to some. That said, we do get the advantage of Canon’s new-ish five-axis image stabilization system for shooting handheld footage and specially designed for video.

Of course the full frame Canon 6D now falls into a similar price class to the both the 80D and 7D Mark II, making it worthy of consideration. Although it's far from new the 6D remains a solid and popular camera despite its comparatively simplistic AF system. Accessories Canon EOS 80D: Aluminum alloy & polycarbonate construction, capable of operating in temperatures between 0°C and 40°C For those unfamiliar with the term Dual Pixel CMOS AF, it refers to the 80D’s sensor-based autofocusing system. When the camera is switched over to live view mode, the internal mirror is lifted out of the way of the image sensor, allowing the camera to continuously record the light entering the lens and transmitting the data to the rear screen as a live image. To speed up the connection speed between the camera and android devices, Canon has included one-touch NFC connectivity in addition to Wi-Fi connectivity. There’s also the option to adjust exposure settings, fire the camera remotely, and transfer full resolution JPEGs and MP4 movies to smart devices using Canon’s free Camera Connect app. A new fine-detail effect has been added to the list of picture styles, which adjusts the sharpening and noise reduction to improve the rendition of fine textures in JPEG files. Finally, just like the 70D, the 80D accepts the widely used LP-E6N battery. Canon EOS 80D – Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology As always, a better option is just to spend a little more. Fortunately Canon’s EOS 80D is within nearby reach for those who can stretch the purse strings just that bit further – and has proved a worthwhile upgrade from the EOS 70D. Its viewfinder provides 100% frame coverage and there is the option to shoot at a single frame per second faster than the maximum burst rate the EOS 77D can achieve, with the fact that image quality is superb with shedloads of detail thrown into the mix. Put simply, if you’re looking to upgrade from a beginner’s DSLR, choose the latter of these two and you won’t be needing to look elsewhere in six months. The camera is aimed at mid-market, semi-pro [4] and enthusiast photographers. [5] New features from 70D [ edit ] As a belt and braces approach, the 77D also features Canon’s DIGIC 7 processor with a native ISO range of 100-25,600 that can be extended to ISO 51,200 equivalent. It’s further claimed that the DIGIC 7 processor also offers improved autofocus when compared to the DIGIC 6 predecessor, which is the one sported by its bigger brother in the EOS 80D. In short, the 90D is a vastly improved camera compared to the already-great 80D. Camera Body Comparison In my opinion DPR does not treat Canon, like they care for Sony and Nikon. What are their motives, I don't know, but it is my opinion. Maybe they think Canon is much bigger than Nikon as a corporation, and they like the David's of this world. The 80D sits in a crowded segment on the market. I compared its image quality directly to two Canon Rebel cameras and three Nikon DSLRs, and that’s not even counting mirrorless options or cameras like the Canon 7D II and 77D. It can be a bit of a headache to remember which cameras do what at this price range, so I’ll go through some of the 80D’s main competitors below. 80D vs Nikon D7500 and D7200
