Dynamo-powered lights – which, most commonly, are powered by a generator hub built into a wheel – are a very popular option on touring and town bikes, and with good reason. They offer infinite run time and the optics in the lights are often very high quality. With 1,000 lumens at full power, Lezyne’s Lite Drive 1000XL provides more than enough brightness and beam spread for riding on unlit roads. You’ll only get around 80 minutes at this power, but dropping it down to the second highest output (which sits at 500 lumens) provides just under three hours of run time, which ought to be enough for even the longest of commutes. For example, 1000 lumens with a coverage of 1 square meter is 1000 lux. (1000/1) If you have 1000 lumens and your light covers 4 square meters, then it’s 250 lux. In fact, there was more than enough power for techy trail riding, and the Ara held its own against higher output lights such as Exposure’s MaXx D MK13 and Lumicycle’s Apogee.

Light output isn’t the only factor to consider, beam patterns are just as important. Some lights project their output into one specific area, illuminating everything within that space with exceptional detail, but that’s frequently at the expense of broader coverage. Another well-made light, the IP67-rated X2 comes with three spare lenses to tune the beam pattern, plus you can customise its modes via an app. The Magicshine MJ-906S is a good choice if you’re looking for a light to mount on your helmet. The same goes for run times. In our tests, we timed each of the lights on their max setting to find out just how long the juice will last. Magicshine has updated this light over the original with the addition of software and hardware needed for the Bluetooth wireless remote control. A gravel bike light should be more powerful than a road bike light to illuminate unlit trails and gravel paths. For gravel riding, it’s unlikely you’ll need the same amount of power as a mountain bike light because you’ll only really need to light the path in front of you rather than twisting and turning trails. That being said, the countdown timer is amazing. It’s nice to be able to head out with a light that’s been sitting in the garage for a while and know how much time you have to work with. Every other light I tested uses some variation of the flashing yellow/red light to indicate battery life. I guess that’s better than nothing, but when you’re going out into the woods by yourself, it’s nice to have something a little more specific.It’s a beautifully made light, if expensive, although there are lower-priced options that don’t include the AKTiv tech. In 2,700-lumen Reflex++ mode, run time is a generous three hours. The aluminium unit is IP65-rated and has a two-year warranty; the LEDs are guaranteed for life. The light’s plethora of modes means that it isn’t especially intuitive to master without studying the instructions carefully. Once the way it works is imprinted into your mind, operation isn’t hugely challenging, though. The battery indicator works well and it remained in boost mode until nearing the very end of its battery’s capacity, only reducing its output once the last battery indicator LED started flashing.
