When All My Five and Country Senses See’ describes the necessity of paying attention to one’s senses for love to function. In total, there are 24 Welsh poetic forms and four metres. The forms have a tendency to be quite short – an Englyn Milwr, for example, was a form used by soldiers to send short messages home during World War I. Sometimes referred to as a British haiku, every verse is composed of three lines, each seven syllables long, all of which rhyme with each other. Though the expressive lines do lend it certain similarities to the Japanese style, the Englyn has a very Welsh identity. Rhyme is an integral aspect of Welsh poetic forms and so, unlike the haiku, each of a verse’s three lines is monorhymed, that is they end in the same rhyme. Harmonious lines Holborow is certainly a name for the future; already a winner and runner up of the Terry Hetherington Young Writers Prize she has this year added the prestigious Robin Reeves prize for Young Writers to that trophy cabinet. Her first collection is due out with Parthian later this year, but in the meantime you can read a selection of her work here. Mary spurned Hugh's proposal," said Ms Schultz. "Four years later, the day before Valentine's Day 1805, she married Benjamin Bowen, another Welsh-American. As a Welsh poet, Sheers draws inspiration from the rich tradition of Welsh poetry, evident in 'Farther' and his other works. He embraces the musicality and lyricism often associated with Welsh poetry, infusing his writing with a distinctive voice. This poem should be considered a great example of Sheers' poetry as well as Welsh poetry generally.

And in the left circle he used 'text-speak' style abbreviations to get his message across (the Xs stand for 'cross'): His poetic name, Hedd Wyn is a bardic name meaning “blessed peace”. He was inspired to change his name to this because of the way the sunlight hit the mist in the Meirionnydd valleys. While his work took many forms, from short stories, to radio broadcasts and more, he is best known for his contributions to poetry. It is fair to say, though, that his life was not that of fame and fortune. In fact, he found it very difficult to earn enough money to support his family. The poet Ronald Stuart Thomas (1913-2000) was a passionate, and sometimes militant, defender of Welsh language and culture. And yet he wrote dazzlingly in English, publishing more than 1,500 poems in over 20 volumes of a 50-year writing career. Born in Cardiff, Thomas worked as an Anglican priest, moving parishes further north and west in Wales until he could move no further: he settled at Aberdaron on the very tip of the Llŷn peninsula. Unlike his namesake Dylan, RS’s poems employ a language of stark simplicity and great beauty. He received the Queen’s Gold medal for poetry in 1964 and was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1996. 10.Sarah Waters

Jan Morris (b.1926) has travelled to every corner of the earth, yet it is ‘the damp, demanding and obsessively interesting country’ of Wales which remains her first love. Morris has been many things: a soldier, a journalist, a travel writer and a historian. In 1953 while working for The Times she secured one of the century’s great scoops - a report of the conquest of Everest. An author of more than 40 books, she has been called the pre-eminent travel writer of our time. 6. Kate Roberts

One of the greatest medieval European poets, Dafydd ap Gwilym (c14th) was born into a noble family near Aberystwyth. Around 170 of his poems survive, which brim with vibrancy and vigour. Love and sex were regular themes; a few of his works are so joyously filthy that they have only recently been included in collections. He died around 1350; both Strata Florida Abbey in Ceredigion and Talley Abbey in Carmarthenshire claim to be his burial place. 5. Jan Morris A world without poetry would be a dire thing indeed. From Dylan Thomas’s famous villanelle Do not go gentle into that good night to Shakespeare’s famous love sonnet parody, Sonnet 130, the forms of these writings, just as much as the words and phrases, have become a large part of literary history and culture. Edwards cemented his reputation as one of Wales’ most significant poets when he won the Costa Poetry Award for his debut collection, My Family and Other Superheroes (Seren) in 2014. Worth noting as well that he is yet another poet on this list previously awarded by the Terry Hetherington Prize. Apart from that he has won a slew of other top national awards, and is generally regarded as one of the nicest guys you’ll ever bump into at a poetry festival. Edwards’ work is a fast, dynamic experience. You can read a selection of his work here in The Morning Star.

This poem is one of the most important poems in the history of Welsh poetry. It is a powerful meditation on the human experience of aging and death, a universal theme that resonates with readers across time and culture. Additionally, the poem's message of resistance and defiance has inspired generations of readers to stand up against oppression, injustice, and despair. Finally, the poem's musicality, vivid imagery, and masterful use of form have cemented Dylan Thomas' reputation as one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. The earliest documented authors of Welsh language poetry are Aneirin and Taliesin, known as the Cynfeirdd (Early Poets).
