When I upgraded to v3 hardware I asked if it could be used in conjunction with the smart TRVs to be told no, it's not compatible. I had the same idea and tried using the TRV as just a sensor; I’ve always wondered if disconnecting the motor would cause any error but it sounds like it doesn’t They already do something like that, I read somewhere the temp measurement you see is not a direct measurement, the TRV has 2 sensors, one closer to the the radiator and one further away in an attempt to compensate for radiator heat. They also average the reading over quite a long time.

A thermostatic radiator valve allows you to set a radiator at a different temperature, so you can heat your home only where required. This can help reduce your home's energy consumption. In a similar vein to the Honeywell Evohome system, Tado’s Smart Radiator Thermostats replace your old dumb TRVs, giving you dedicated control over each room’s temperature. PROBLEM: the problem is that the actuators are acting on this data, and not on what we'dd like to have as a solution (a cozy room when waking up at 6 un the morning) Our main thermostat is located downstairs, where it tends to be much warmer. Nest’s setup (which only records the temperature from one point in the home) was unable to recognise when it was cold upstairs, and hence wouldn’t turn the heating on. When you are trying to maintain a constant temp with a luke warm radiator, I can see this working somewhat. But when you are heating from cold to much warmer, and you have a glowing hot radiator and you are trying to guess room temperature by comparing 2 sensors mounted a few cm apart, I dont think this is feasible.

In contrast, Tado was much more consistent. The flat was heated evenly, and no one ended up with a cold bedroom. The downside of this is the slightly higher energy usage. Smart Radiator Thermostats are easy to install, provided you currently already have TRVs. If so, you just unscrew the old ones, and fit the smart ones in their place. There are three adjustment rings in the box that should suit most types of TRVs. If you don’t have TRVs, you’ll need to call in a plumber. Thankfully the individual radiator valves are a lot easier to love and feel like a much more premium alternative to the ‘dumb’ valves we previously had installed. A sleek, featureless while cylinder while not in use, the units reveal a neat little LCD screen when you use them, which displays their current status.
