About this deal

Beth had me laughing and crying. I was incredibly invested in her journey and was left a blubbering mess at the end (and many times throughout). It had me laughing out loud, on a bus no less, crying and laughing. This book is a tonic! I read it in one go. I was rooting for Beth the whole way through!!' She's quit more jobs and relationships than she can remember, and she still sleeps in her childhood bedroom. It's not that she hasn't tried to grow up, it's just that so far, the only commitment she's held down is Friday drinks at the village pub. Beth is the perfect protagonist – strong, lovable, frustrating and perfectly flawed. As a reader, it’s clear she needs to go through a rite of passage – and you soon experience her pain along this journey. I felt deeply for Beth dealing with her family tragedy and during the daily mishaps, which often followed with sarcastic mutterings from her mother or Beth’s inner critic. Here I should mention the flipside to these moments – like many parenting stories; there were moments of hilarity, such as the sharply observed description of a modern children’s party.

After three bestselling Unmumsy Mum books, you’ve now released your debut novel, Stepping Up – what inspired you to turn your hand to fiction? Stepping Up is the debut novel by Sarah Turner, known for her blog The Unmumsy Mum and her best-selling non-fiction books, The Unmumsy Mum, The Unmumsy Mum Diary and The Unmumsy Mum A-Z. Thanks to Sarah’s publisher, we are incredibly excited to review this early proof edition. Out in March 2022, this feel-good read is sure to be a hit. Commercial, uplifting and women’s fiction fans, read on… After graduating with first-class honours in Philosophy from The University of Exeter, she dabbled in careers in finance then higher education before a 'warts and all' parenting blog she'd started to let off steam gathered unexpected momentum and writing became her full-time job.Do you go into a book completely blind? I follow Sarah Turner aka The Unmumsy mum on the socials and have followed her journey as a mother. Agreeing and championing what she reveals and says. So when I saw that she had written a novel, a work of fiction I knew I wanted to read it but also I had my preconceived ideas. I thought the book would be predictable, light and fluffy and a rom com. Why? I don't know why? I was completely wrong 💕 Written with such love and heart. Sarah has done an exceptional job of marrying her trademark comedy with deep and raw emotion. I loved it!' GIOVANNA FLETCHER The characters around her are also so interesting!! I LOVED Albert (so wholesome and pure omg the way he always uses CAPS FOR HIS TEXTS and he calls emojis THE LITTLE PICTURES 🥺🥺) When her sister and brother in law are involved in a car crash Beth's life is turned upside down and she finds herself looking after her 14 year old neice Polly and three year old nephew Ted.

An incredible debut novel, warm, uplifting and full of so much love. I couldn’t put it down. The pacing was perfect. I feel like everyone needs to read this! It’s definitely one of those books that will stay with me for a long long time. An unspeakable tragedy turns Beth’s life upside down, and she finds herself guardian to her teenage niece and toddler nephew, catapulted into an unfamiliar world of bedtime stories, parents’ evenings and cuddly elephants. Having never been responsible for anyone – or anything – it’s not long before she feels seriously out of her depth. Turner has a firmly established fanbase from her blog The Unmumsy Mum, which documents the highs and lows of motherhood in an approachable way. Heartwarming and heartbreaking. Full of warmth and Turner's perceptive parenting humour. This is a book that will break your heart and make you fall in love all at once! Katy Colins, author of THE BEST IS YET TO COMEI hope readers will find it to be an uplifting tale of love and loss and the power of hope to brighten even the darkest days. Stop EVERYTHING and read this! Funny, tender and beautifully observed. Loved, loved, LOVED it!' Cathy Bramley A moving and beautifully-told tale of parenthood but not as you know it. I just loved it.' Gillian McAllister Heartwarming and heartbreaking. Full of warmth and Turner's perceptive parenting humour. This is a book that will break your heart and make you fall in love all at once! * Katy Colins, author of THE BEST IS YET TO COME *

Stop EVERYTHING and read this! Funny, tender and beautifully observed. Loved, loved, LOVED it! Cathy Bramley Stop EVERYTHING and read this! Funny, tender and beautifully observed. Loved, loved, LOVED it!? Cathy Bramley Stepping Up is Sarah's first novel, the spark of an idea coming from a conversation about will-writing and more specifically guardianship, should the unthinkable happen. I want and NEED a book all about Albert and his life. I fell hard for the next door neighbour 💕 Sarah Turner if you are reading this review. Please write a book about Albert 😁 his story needs to be told.

Retailers:

Ondanks dat er ietwat voorspelbare wendingen in zitten + een open einde heb ik genoten van dit verhaal en vond ik het heel mooi hoe Beth evolueert en haar doel vindt. I loved Albert and his shouty texts, and Jory, who I was rooting for the entire read! Beth was funny, and I couldn’t help but laugh with her. I finished it, but didn’t want to finish it, I fell in love with all the characters, the humour and heartbreak. I loved how Beth stepped up in her own way. Yes, she had to adapt, and she got it wrong a few times as most of us do, but she didn’t give up, and it was inspiring to see her grow.
