The Meadow Brook, which ultimately moved to Belmont Park, no longer is run. But the Maryland Hunt Cup had its first running in 1894, and two other popular Maryland timber-racing fixtures — the Grand National Point-to-Point and My Lady’s Manor — were inaugurated as sanctioned races in 1901 and 1909, respectively. To establish rules for the fast-growing sport, the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association was founded in 1895. In my own experience, the one church where past and present dissolve into each other most completely is Old St Paul’s in Edinburgh, of which Holloway was once rector, about which he wrote so compellingly in his memoir Leaving Alexandria. Ross does it full justice too, helped by excellent interviews with both Alison Watt, whose superlative painting Still hangs above the altar in the church’s Warrior’s Chapel, and Holloway himself. Personally, it’s art, not faith that imbues the place with such a deep sense of spirituality: the depth of Watt’s art and Holloway’s own writing, or the story I’ve heard him tell of his predecessor as rector, a double Military Cross winner in the First World War who was known for his compassion towards the poor and vulnerable. This is a truly wonderful book, every bit as good as Tomb With A View. The book - a tour of British churches and the people who look after them - has empathy in spades and is an engaging read from beginning to end. Modern usage of the term "steeplechase" differs between countries. In Ireland and the United Kingdom, it refers only to races run over large, fixed obstacles, in contrast to " hurdle" races where the obstacles are much smaller. The collective term "jump racing" or " National Hunt racing" is used when referring to steeplechases and hurdle races collectively (although, properly speaking, National Hunt racing also includes some flat races).
