Collectively, Great Britain and Ireland account for over 50% of all jump races worldwide, carding 4,800 races over fences in 2008. Jump racing in Great Britain and Ireland is officially known as National Hunt racing. Jumps racing was set to end in Victoria after the 2010 season. [11] In September 2010, having satisfied a limit on the maximum number of deaths among starting horses, hurdle racing was granted a 3-year extension by Racing Victoria. [12] A decision regarding steeplechase was postponed until October 2010 when a program for the 2011 season only was granted. Steeplechasing found its way to the United States through the fox-hunting field and had established itself within a few years after Lottery won the first Grand National. The sport’s first footholds were in Long Island, Maryland, Virginia, and eastern Pennsylvania, and steeplechasing soon spread to the Carolinas, Georgia, Massachusetts, and other states. But the Maryland Hunt Cup had its first running in 1894, and two other popular Maryland timber-racing fixtures — the Grand National Point-to-Point and My Lady’s Manor — were inaugurated as sanctioned races in 1901 and 1909, respectively. To establish rules for the fast-growing sport, the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association was founded in 1895. In my own experience, the one church where past and present dissolve into each other most completely is Old St Paul’s in Edinburgh, of which Holloway was once rector, about which he wrote so compellingly in his memoir Leaving Alexandria. Ross does it full justice too, helped by excellent interviews with both Alison Watt, whose superlative painting Still hangs above the altar in the church’s Warrior’s Chapel, and Holloway himself. Personally, it’s art, not faith that imbues the place with such a deep sense of spirituality: the depth of Watt’s art and Holloway’s own writing, or the story I’ve heard him tell of his predecessor as rector, a double Military Cross winner in the First World War who was known for his compassion towards the poor and vulnerable. I shouldn’t be too surprised: the growing unpopularity of Christian rituals of death is one of the signs of our times. As an example, consider this: direct cremations (no service, no mourners) used to be almost unheard of – even murderers and paupers got some sort of ceremonial send-off into the afterlife. Now they account for one in four of all funerals. Eventing's Short and Long Formats Compared". thehorse.com. June 2005. Archived from the original on 11 October 2017 . Retrieved 9 October 2017.

Modern usage of the term "steeplechase" differs between countries. In Ireland and the United Kingdom, it refers only to races run over large, fixed obstacles, in contrast to " hurdle" races where the obstacles are much smaller. The collective term "jump racing" or " National Hunt racing" is used when referring to steeplechases and hurdle races collectively (although, properly speaking, National Hunt racing also includes some flat races). Elsewhere in the world, "steeplechase" is used to refer to any race that involves jumping obstacles.Oakhurst 3DE". Oakhurst Farm. Archived from the original on 10 October 2017 . French jump racing is similar to British and Irish National Hunt races, with a few notable differences. Hurdles are not collapsible, being more akin to small brush fences. Chases often have large fences called bullfinches, a large hedge up to 8ft (2.4m) tall that horses have to jump through rather than over. There are also a larger number of cross-country chases where horses have to jump up and down banks, gallop through water, jump over stone walls as well as jump normal chasing fences. John Hislop, an English horseman who wrote a definitive book about steeplechasing, perhaps best described the differences between the two Thoroughbred racing sports. Although speaking about England and Irish racing, his distinction is equally accurate for American steeplechasing. He wrote:
