Salomon shoes often run narrow, but the OUTward is a bit more generous and a great match for those with average feet. Waterproof tops water resistance and water repellency. However, just like bulletproof vests cannot protect against certain types of bullets, the GORE-TEX outline is unable to keep water from seeping through in certain conditions. One of the first days I wore the shoes on our trip, it was pouring rain and, unfortunately, my feet didn't stay entirely dry.Lightweight and thoughtfully designed. The OUTline has the feel of a running shoe but with the sole and traction of a hiker. Salomon went classic with regular flat laces on the Outline GTX. This type of laces reduces discomfort for the instep, guaranteeing a comfortable fit. They're also durable and easy to tie. As with many other Salomon shoes the midfoot is narrow and the toe box has a precise fit, so if you've got wide feet give this one a miss. Presuming the form fits though the OUTline shoes feel cosseting, like an extension of the foot rather than an uncomfortable appendage. Out of the box, the Salomon OUTline Low GTX was noticeably light in its construction but seemed to be right in line with what we’ve come to expect. However, after our initial hike, we noticed that the low-profile rubber toe cap already had begun to peel away. On one shoe, it’s already separated, and simply pushing down on the toe of the other caused it to separate. In our opinion, that’s unacceptable and something that shouldn’t happen until way down the road when the rest of the shoe is starting to give out. No other part on the shoe indicates durability issues, but we sincerely hope that Salomon improves the connection point at the toe cap.
Performance Comparison
These Salomon trainers are equipped with a High Traction Contagrip outsole. In case you're not familiar with the design, it leverages three factors to ensure the best grip possible: Density, Compound, and Geometry. However, I always have to make two knots or the laces untie at some point while I'm walking. It's not that big of a painpoint but it does take longer to untie them again after the walk. These Salomon sneakers are also stitch-free, light, and slim fit, giving it a snug-like feel that complements its overall aesthetics.

Lacing is as important as any other performance factor. If your laces are hard to tie or keep getting loose, they can be a real pain. When I first got these Salomon hiking sneakers, I took them to Australia for a three-week trip full of hikes through the bush, in humid rainforest, and along beaches. They served me well and have remained comfortable on the walks I've done since then. We put the men’s Salomon OUTward Mid GTX through its paces for this review, and Salomon makes the shoe in a women’s-specific version for the same price. The women’s OUTward Mid GTX features an identical build but weighs slightly less at 1 pound 11.5 ounces and is offered in different colorways. As we mentioned above, neither model is sold in a non-waterproof version yet, but we hope Salomon adds a more breathable, non-GTX design to the collection in the future. Stability-wise, several features accommodate tread and steadiness, namely, the outsole’s relatively wide base (wide in comparison to its fit). Combined with the 5 mm lugs, both elements guarantee smoothe hiking on whatever trail you choose. During our research, we noticed that some wearers complained about outsole separation from the upper. In addition, the tread on the heel wore down faster than people expected — typically after a couple of hundred miles.
