Our final theme of the year, and sadly Featherby, is Lights Out. We explore the text The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas and produce formal writing, extended narrative and discussion texts. This theme is a transition theme as we prepare ourselves for the next stage of our learning at secondary school.I like the book because there is a lot of tension and suspense so you don’t get bored. My favourite character is Beans because she is a hero and is brilliant at solving mysteries. I would recommend it because it’s a entertaining and when you read it, it makes you eager to find out more! This theme is underpinned by the class read The Highway Man and The Landlady which we use to write suspense stories, play scripts and poetry. In history we learn about the period the Highway Man is set and the geography around travel building on our understanding of infrastructure from Operation Gadgetman. In science we recall and review our learning from the year and previous years ensuring that we are knowledgeable in all areas. Our art focus links in with R.E. through using different sketching techniques to produce sketches inspired by Hinduism. The whole story about a father who is a great inventor, but later gets kidnapped and his very much intelligent and adventurous daughter trying to rescue him is entertaining. There is a great description and the plot doesn't drag on. Many parts are also expected, but I think the part about the ATM invention was the best.

Year 6 is made up of three classes: Bagheera (Mrs Astirbadi), Shere Khan (Mrs Platford) and Mowgli (Mr Ballard). Other adults in Year 6 include Mrs Chopra, Miss Vaughan, Mrs Washford and MrsTulloch. We have been inspired by characters from the book Jungle Book and the friendship and acceptance from the characters in the story. Beans calls her dad 'Gadgetman' because of the weird and wonderful gadgets he comes up with - everything from exploding biscuits to spy kits. But when Gadgetman accidentally invents a device that could be used to steal millions of pounds, the wrong people find out and Gadgetman is kidnapped! This resource is a reading comprehension booklet that uses the text Operation Gadgetman as a text to answer higher level questions focused on comprehension, language choice and vocabulary. The booklet is aimed at UKS2 and is based on the well researched and highly effective recommendations in Doug Lemov’s Reading Reconsidered approach. This book had action and suspense because beans’ dad was kidnapped by two kidnappers. the reason why is because beans’ dad invented a device that could be used to get lots of money. Soon, the kidnappers find out. I like beans because she and her friends Louisa and Ann tried their best to save bean’s dad. They are given spy kits that could be used to save dad and send the kidnappers to the jail. Our learning is thematic meaning each term we focus on one theme through our reading, writing and wider curriculum. By learning in this way, we deepen our understanding, become critical thinkers and develop both knowledge and skills in key areas. This theme builds upon prior learning on South America, rainforest and Rivers, supporting us with developing our webs of knowledge in these areas. Our class read is Journey to The River Sea which we use to write stories, poetry and information reports. Our geography knowledge is developed on South America by learning about the physical features of the landscape including the rivers and rainforest. Our art focus is on producing prints of leaves and plants in the style of Frida Kahlo and developing our sketching skills. In science we return to electricity and look at equity and experiments on compound and more advanced circuits.
