NUMBERS 13:33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.” I've thought a lot about howmany books I would like to try and read this year. I am setting myself up a reading journal... as if I don't record my reads in enough places. I use Goodreads, obviously... I use an app called Bookly which has changed my life. It records how longyou read, tells you how fast you read, gives you so many stats... I LOVE IT! I also have a note open in my notes app which I update with what I've read as I finish it, but I wanted somewherephysically to hopefully keep a couple ofyears worth of reads all in one place together.Whether I keep it running or not will be something elsealtogether but we'll see... Dark, exciting, furiously-paced and full of twists, KILLING JERICHO sets the stage for a unique detective' Alex Smith having a hope in God, which they themselves also await, that there is about to be a resurrection, both of the just and of the unjust Acts 24:15

The Bookseller - Rights - Zaffre snaps up Hussey’s debut

The opening of this book is really gripping and although I found Hussey's writing quite difficult at times, he really knows how to create a world and create an atmosphere. Fresh out of prison, and forced to take refuge with the fairground family he previously rejected, Scott Jericho is in a bad way. He is existing rather than living. His former boss tries to interest him in some of the cases he is working on, but nothing seems to reach him. When he is approached by the mysterious Professor Campbell about a bizarre series of seemingly unconnected ritualistic murders that recall a 150-year-old legend linked to the Jericho Travelling Fair, he is compelled to investigate. Disgraced and penniless after his assault on a violent suspect, he is forced to seek refuge with the fairground family he once rejected. Now, troubled by his failure, Jericho’s brilliant mind stagnates. Crime fiction is crying out for more diversity, and in Scott Jericho we have been gifted a blisteringly new brand of hero." - Sarah HilaryAmazing, as expected. Being familiar with the authors YA novel, I had high expectations. He met them. A distinctive detective, a striking setting, and macabre murders – what more could a reader ask for?’ Deuteronomy 18:9-12: 9“When you enter the land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not learn to imitate the detestable things of those nations. 10There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. 12For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD; and because of these detestable things the LORD your God will drive them out before you" (emphasis added). Killing Jericho needs to be on every crime fiction fans list, it is written extremely well by William Hussey, you can feel his love and passion for his people (the son of a travelling showman himself) and it is an important book within the travelling community and also the LGQBT+ community, and I really hope that Killing Jericho wins prizes and gets the recognition that is so deserved.

Killing Jericho by William Hussey | Waterstones

This wonderfully unusual book stands out in the crime fiction genre. The main character is gay, but this is not the main focus of the book, it is just who he happens to be. We gain insight into the traveller way of life, including the unique patois spoken by the fairground people. In addition to the main story, the theme of prejudice in modern society runs through the narrative, often linked to the person Scott believed was responsible for the deaths of three young children when he was a police officer, and who is still a troublesome presence in his life. Now the gates of Jericho ( F) were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.When the trumpets sounded, ( Z) the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, ( AA) the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city. ( AB) 21 They devoted ( AC) the city to the Lord and destroyed ( AD) with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys. This, surprise surprise, doesn’t work. But then what happens is that Scott somehow gets entangled with another mystery, one that’s a lot darker, that seems to be ritualistic and following an old legend of the Jericho Travelling Fair (coincidentally, relating to Scott’s family. How neatly this all ties together!). This is where Scott’s magical paedo spotting powers come in, since one of them is tasked with sending him a message about the murders, on behalf of the other, who wants him to investigate. Scott does not question this. William Hussey is an award-winning author of books for children and Young Adults. As a gay man and a visiting author, he has spoken to hundreds of LGBTQ+ students worldwide. Hearing their stories of modern intolerance, prejudice and the tragic consequences this has can lead to, inspired him to write Hideous Beauty. There is a dark and gruesome murder at a fairground in this unique crime thriller. This enthralling story follows Scott Jericho, a former detective from the travelling community, on a roller coaster of curiosities. Nothing is as it seems. Who is the killer, three people are dead and if the scene plays out there are two more to go. Is it a case of revenge after such a long period of time? Can Jericho prevent them and catch the killer in time?

The crime genre is filled with stories like Jericho’s – one can take a peek at the works of Val McDermid, Stuart McBride, or Helen Fields to find stories overflowing with deeply-flawed yet righteous investigators, labyrinthian plots, and murders macabre enough to turn David Fincher’s stomach (there are, this reviewer must report, some in Killing Jericho, that wouldn’t have been out of place in his seminal Se7en). It’s a credit then that Hussey, drawing upon family experience within the GRT community and history, crafts a story with a unique premise and hook, steeped in Traveller lore, from a social group sorely unexplored and woefully misunderstood by the wider UK population. In his debut adult thriller, Hussey wanted to create a lead character that reflected his own experiences, the publisher says. Having grown up in the Traveller community as the son of a fairground showman, he has created the first Traveller detective protagonist in crime fiction history. And, like his hero, Hussey is a gay man existing in this culture, with all its complexities, richness and challenges, all of which has heavily inspired his writing. The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” ( E) And Joshua did so. I can’t remember where I first saw the talk of Killing Jericho by William Hussey but as soon as I saw the cover, I just knew it was a book I needed to read and I’m so glad I have! There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil. With all this in mind, I wanted to love Killing Jericho, but ultimately I found the overwritten pros It can be difficult among the ocean of crime fiction that's out there to enjoy to conjure a sleuth who's undeniably fresh, while still feeling authentic as well (rather than try-hard or forced by the author's hand). A main character that seems very different to what's gone before but also real and organic to the particular story and setting, not just shoved in by the author in a 'look at this, look how unique my character is' way, like they've cobbled together a jigsaw puzzle of lesser-used character traits. So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.Eat, Drink, and Be Merry: The Ultimate Guide to Celebrating Christmas with the Best Drinks Books On The Shelves Linsey Miller; Rosiee Thor; Moniza Hossain; Akemi Dawn Bowman; Emily Victoria; S.J.
