About this deal

Some people may think the themes of feminism and ‘girl empowerment’ are too strong. I would beg to differ. Having read June Millington’s autobiography Land of a Thousand Bridges, with its numerous examples of piss-poor treatment and sexist attitudes they had to endure from the very beginning and throughout their active years, I actually think they show great restraint. There are sadly more than enough examples to pull from, and this could so easily have resulted in very angry and bitter songs. The fact that this is turned into a much more positive and encouraging album, where they ultimately want to empower both sexes for the better, is as extraordinary as the people who pulled it off so well. Then, in 1972, they got a fan letter from David Bowie, which Millington ignored. “I didn’t know who he was,” she said.

Patti Quatro continued to work as a session musician for her sister Suzi and was involved in the reissue of material by the Quatro sisters' early band the Pleasure Seekers. [33] Brie Brandt, later known as Brie Howard-Darling and currently as Brie Darling, had an active post-Fanny career, fronting the bands American Girls, which released one album in 1986, [34] and Boxing Gandhis, which has released four albums since the mid-1990s. [35] She has also acted in films such as 1982's Android [36] and is the mother of Playboy Playmate Brandi Brandt. [35] Quatro and Brandt both toured with Electric Light Orchestra and appeared on the album A New World Record in 1976. [37] [38] The group was founded by guitarist June Millington and her sister, bassist Jean, who had been playing music together since they moved from the Philippines to California in the early 1960s. After playing in several bands, they attracted the interest of producer Richard Perry who signed them to Reprise Records in 1969 as Fanny. The band recorded four albums together before June Millington quit the group. Following a final album, Fanny disbanded in 1975. The Millington sisters have continued to play music together since the split, and formed the spin-off group Fanny Walked The Earth in 2018. This album is not designed to steamroll itself into your soul or blow your mind; instead it pulls you in with a blend of infectious harmonies, sharp and catchy hooks, set on a foundation of positive vibes and sublime influence.a b c d Johnson, Kathleen (September 2016). [41] An album also titled Fanny Walked the Earth was released in March 2018. The album marks the first time June, Jean, and Brie all recorded at the same time in nearly 50 years. [42] [43] In her teen years, her parents brought the family to the US. “My dad didn’t like the Filipino culture,” she said. “He used to say ’Filipinos are so duplicitous.’ Did I really need to hear that?”

It’s a sprawling nine, sometimes 10-piece cast, but ultimately it is the funky brainchild of Kevin Russell, who grew up in Beaumont, TX and Shreveport, LA, the cradle of the swamp pop and bayou R&B sounds that drip off his fingers like honey and hot sauce. Think Gulf Coast meets Muscle Shoals with strong pop-song structures. The band was then renamed Fanny, not with a sexual connotation but to denote a female spirit. [7] The initial lineup consisted of June on guitar, Jean on bass, de Buhr on drums, Barclay on keyboards, and Brandt on lead vocals and percussion. Perry dismissed Brandt because he wanted the group to be a self-contained four-piece band like the Beatles. [10] The Millingtons and Barclay all assumed lead vocal duties on alternating songs, while de Buhr sang lead occasionally on later albums.
