About this deal

For her next novel, Harris intends to please the fans who found Blueeyedboy a bit too hot to handle. Not exactly. Most of the time I was writing it, I wasn’t sure what (if anything) had been dun, or indeed, by whom. I see it now - like Gentlemen and Players, its close relative - as a kind of murder-mystery with no detective, no apparent crime and a couple of quite unreliable narrators - Joanne Harris with a twist. Delivers an almighty twist in the tale late on...brilliantly atmospheric and at times heartbreaking' -- The Times The idea has been germinating for some years, since Joanne was in Naples chatting to a taxi driver.

I don’t think of the process of writing as creation,” she muses. “To me it’s much more like method acting. I nearly always write in the first person, so the more I know about the characters the better I am at writing them. I have to work out a lot about their past. The United Kingdom's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. Imagine if she’d lived a normal life: a house, a son, a husband, a job in an indie bookshop. Not a very happy life, but a normal, boring, suburban life in a busy part of London. I have a short story in this collection. It’s called RED HORSE, RUNNING, and it’s set in my Nine Worlds universe… Buy it here! Coming soon: MAIDEN, MOTHER, CRONE Delivers an almighty twist in the tale late on...brilliantly atmospheric and at times heartbreaking The TimesIt is a close community, rife with conflicting factions. Outsiders are not welcome, and those who do not fit in are the subject of gossip and speculation. There is a great deal of snobbery, and there is bitter rivalry between the state school and St Oswald's, the grammar school. Unable to write books, she wrote online, enjoying the freedom of role play, as she entered various communities there. Why is BB so attracted to Emily? What does he see in her? Do you think he identifies with her? Or does he want to be like her? Her American publishers were so disturbed by the change in style that they turned the book down. Harris is unrepentant. Identity – both real and fake – tends to be a recurrent theme of yours. How does this book explore the idea?

Loved Runemarks…a core fantasy much like the stories of David Eddings or Terry Brooks, with a cool twist on Norse mythology. (Stephenie Meyer) Folklore/fairytale Just one dislike - the books is made up of the web posts of two people, but they write in such a similar way, it is hard to tell them apart. They use the same words even, echo the same thoughts. Perhaps it is deliberate - the book is the more menacing to be completed in the same tone - perhaps Joanne wants us to be on edge not quite knowing who is hiding behind which identity. Not exactly. Most of the time I was writing it, I wasn’t sure what (if anything) had been dun, or indeed, by whom. I see it now – like Gentlemen and Players, its close relative – as a kind of murder-mystery with no detective, no apparent crime and a couple of quite unreliable narrators – Joanne Harris with a twist.Engrossing psychological thriller...a novel of unusual complexity...Harris, best known for Chocolat , again shows her skill and versatility' -- Mail on Sunday BB’s identity changes throughout the story as we learn more about him. Why do you think he would be feel uncomfortable with his own identity? If you’re studying this book as part of a readers’ group, here are a few resources to help you get started. Note: questions do contain spoilers, so read the book first if you want to avoid them...

Is Emily White the Albertine featured on the blog, who not only comments on blueeyedboy's blog posts, but writes quite a few of her own? Is she the girl in the red coat that BB is in love with, but who is actually Nigel's girlfriend? What is the lie she told when she was young, and how did it influence her life and that of those around her? Will we get such an opus next month about the cost of 24 hour fitness & how the charge the big fancy new gym schedule to our small, odd shape and size (as the first big gym try in the late 70s or so. Colours are very important in this book. What do colours mean to you? What colour associations do you have? Essentially, the gist of this book is that there's a 40-something guy named B.B. He lives with his mother, and spends big chunks of his life online, writing fiction about committing murder on Totally-Not-LiveJournal. He's part of a fiction writing group that focuses on villains, and the entire book is told in the fics and journal entries that he writes, with occasional additions from one of the other characters who's in his fic writing group, but who he knows in real life. The format of the novel was great - through private and public entries into an online journal, the reader is able to piece together a fractured, horrible tale.

Retailers:

The author writes in a very graphic, sensually evocative style. In what way does this shape the narrative?
