About this deal

I can honestly say my jaw was gaping for the entire sequence, all the way from the moment when I realized he was going to carry the device out, step by step, to the end. Miller was widely criticized after the comic’s release for his misinformed and highly offensive portrayal of Muslims, and with good reason: Islam is depicted throughout “Holy Terror” as primitive and archaic, and its followers are treated with undisguised contempt. No distinction is made between Al-Qaeda and the 1.6 billion Muslims living peacefully worldwide -- to Miller, they’re all just maniacal lunatics named Mohammed who scream “Jihad!” a lot before blowing stuff up. That’s not only a profoundly messed-up worldview, but a weak basis for a cohesive and well-developed narrative. No wonder it was so unpopular! Top 300 Comics–February 2002". ICv2. February 4, 2002. Archived from the original on September 13, 2016 . Retrieved October 1, 2016. Overall, the comic is great. The action parts are very enjoyable, but most of the time it's filled with endless philosophical dialogue about ethics and sci-fi things. That might sound boring, but it most certainly isn't. It's a really thought provoking comic that you can't "just" read. To truly understand "Ronin" you need to devote some time thinking about it's complex ideas and messages.

Green, Karen (December 3, 2010). "Into the Valley of Death?". ComiXology. Archived from the original on October 20, 2011 . Retrieved November 25, 2011. It's like something out of Hollywood, right? Hollywood thought so, too. They made a movie in 1962 called The 300 Spartans, which 5-year-old Frank Miller saw in the theater, and it had a powerful influence on him.The ideas for Ronin came together while Miller was doing extensive research into kung fu films, martial arts, samurai comic books and samurai ethics for his work on Daredevil. He remarked that "the aspect of the samurai that intrigues me most is the ronin, the masterless samurai, the fallen warrior. ... This entire project comes from my feelings that we, modern men, are ronin. We're kind of cut loose. I don't get the feeling from the people I know, the people I see on the street, that they have something greater than themselves to believe in. Patriotism, religion, whatever — they've all lost their meaning for us." [1] How do you end something like that?! How?! How, how how?! So many things left unanswered! So many things left ambiguous to the point of frustration. It doesn't completely ruin things but it makes me feel like there should have been an epilogue at least.

Writer Denny O'Neil and artist Frank Miller...used their considerable talents in this rare collaboration that teamed two other legends – Dr. Strange and Spider-Man. Ronin is, despite all this, a very good-looking comic. Some of the credit for this goes to DC’s production department and printers (and to Miller for insisting that it be done this way), but a large part goes to the colorist Lynn Varley. On the evidence of Ronin, Varley is, quite simply, the best colorist in American comics. Most other colorists have, when confronted with the full process separations, tried to do the artist’s job for him by playing around with modeling and airbrush effects, while ignoring the fact that the greatest benefit of the full process is the acquisition is a more varied, and therefore subtler, palette. I could get behind this if the story made me care about her. Spoiler: It did not make me care. Any evidence of her drive goes out the window when she sleeps with the ronin, WHO JUST KILLED ALL OF HER SOLDIERS, IN A SEWER AFTER SHE WAS TORTURED FOR DAYS. Meanwhile, by unknown means, the ancient Japanese sword is discovered, releasing Agat and the ronin. They continue their blood feud throughout Aquarius and across the wastelands of New York. Casey looks into the matter, eventually discovering the truth behind it all. Superman #400: "The Living Legends of Superman" (a, with Elliot S. Maggin, among other artists, 1984)
