About this deal

Earl was born and raised in Stamford, Lincolnshire. She attended Stamford High School. She obtained a degree from Hull University and won the university's Philip Larkin literary prize in 1994. I am seriously baffled because never in my life have I liked a tv show/movie better than the book version. But that's most probably only because I'm a book snob or something.

I thought being castable meant you had to look a certain way, be a certain way. But it’s about having the edge’: Sharon Rooney. Photograph: Robert Ormerod for the Observer First of all, I would say that I enjoyed the writing of the book (composed in journal entries). It was a very relevant and realistic teenage voice, that was relate able and sometimes hilarious. Unfortunately, this was the only thing that I really enjoyed about the book, and I kept reading only really because I found the writing easy and fun to read. Rooney received a Scottish Bafta nomination for best television actress for her performance as Rae. Now 26, she was also named in the 2013 Bafta breakthrough Brits list, an initiative to support the UK’s emerging talent. Yet until Mad Fat Diary, based on the 1990s diaries of author Rae Earl, she had been limited to working for Theatre in Education, a school-touring group, and was about to quit acting. “I said to my mum: ‘I don’t want to do this any more. It’s too hard. I’m not getting any decent parts and I don’t want to compromise who I am.’” What would she have done instead? “I wanted to be a nurse. I helped look after my gran when she was poorly and I always think there’s something really rewarding about helping people. That’s why Mad Fat Diary is so special.” Teenage viewers write to her about their problems – and Rooney has done a lot of research into mental health issues. “You’re not just making a TV show,” she says. “You’re helping people to see that life is good.” The show also received praise for its honest portrayal of mental health. Brian Semple of The Independent calls the show "surprisingly honest, funny and even moving account of what it’s like for a teenage girl to live with serious mental health problems, free of many of the clichés that often inform how mental illness is portrayed on TV," going on to say that Rae "has a mental illness, but it doesn't define her. It's just something that she has to deal with and try to manage on a daily basis, just like the one in ten young people in the UK who have a mental illness." Semple refers to My Mad Fat Diary as a "breath of fresh air and will do a lot to change the way young people think about mental health." [12] The mental health charity Mind honoured the show in their annual Media Awards in the Drama category in 2014 [13] and 2016. [14] [15]Yes, Teen Rae. Why are you fat? But you know, that question is irrelevant. That's like asking someone why the sky is blue. Answerless.

That’s what, in an ideal world, makes social media such a useful tool Earl suggests – it can bring together all sorts of people from all over the place and show them they’re not on their own. What’s less helpful though, is “the fallacy of this perfect adolescence. That really needs to be shot out of the water because it’s nonsense.”

I have to say, it's the most bizarre, wonderful experience you could possibly have, watching something like that. I think the team at Tiger Aspect have done such a fantastic job, I think Tom Bidwell, who wrote it, has made something wonderful from it. I love what he's done. Rae is often teased and ridiculed by her peers, strangers, and even her own mother. Her friends even take jabs at her. I honestly felt bad for her, reading these experiences. She powered through, strong as an ox, though, where many of us would’ve probably have given up.
