About this deal

Polvoron is a type of Filipino shortbread made from flour, butter, and sugar. It is traditionally made in the shape of a log, but can also be made into balls or discs. Polvoron is often flavoured with nuts or chocolate, and is typically sold in small, individually wrapped portions. Though not recommended, the recipe will also work with margarine, vegan butters, and shortening. Shelf stable polvoron is often made with shortening. Optional Ingredients This recipe is for a Filipino dessert called ube polvoron. The ingredients are ube powder, milk, butter, sugar, and flour. The ube powder is mixed with milk and butter, then sugar and flour are added. All that’s left to do is to toast the ingredients in a hot yok, let cool to, and shape it with a polvoron mold. You cannot make polvoron in your kitchen if you don’t have a polvoron mold. We’re using a round polvoron mold for this recipe but it’s not a problem if you opted other mold shapes. It’ll probably increase its worth if the polvoron shape has a neat design.

If you are looking for a delicious and festive treat, then polvoron is the perfect choice. Ube powder Step 8: Once you’re done shaping each polvoron, place the baking sheets in the fridge and chill for at least 1 hour to allow the polvoron to set. Once it is soft, it is then mixed with the coconut milk and sugar. The mixture is then formed into balls and steamed until cooked through. Volvoron is a delicious and unique dessert that is sure to impress your guests.

The islands were collectively colonized and unified under the name Philippines in honor of King Philip II. The original Spanish recipe for polvoron is made up of animal fat (lard), milk, crushed nuts, flour, and sugar. In the Philippines, we make our polvoron with practically the same ingredients but we toast ingredients, use powdered milk, and use margarine or butter rather than lard. Plus, we flavor our polvoron with literally every flavor we can think of but the original unflavored polvoron is also quite popular. Prior to this, the different islands were independent states with their own languages, traditions, and governments. It is often used in desserts and baked goods. It can also be used to add color to dishes such as ube halaya and ube ice cream. Ube powder is a good source of vitamins and minerals, including potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Then, mash the yam and mix it with the butter, milk, and sugar. Once the mixture is smooth, shape it into small discs or balls. Next, coat the polvoron in toasted or ground rice.

Unfortunately, pinipig can be difficult to find in the United States. My local Filipino market carries a frozen version during the holidays.

In Balingit’s debut cookbook Mayumu: Filipino American Desserts Remixed, out on February 28 from HarperCollins, polvoron are particularly eye-catching delights, with crushed freeze-dried fruit adding an extra dose of color and flavor. And like everything in Mayumu, it’s not exactly traditional, but Balingit’s own playful version of something she loved growing up. Polvorones are rich and sweet, and their powdery texture makes them very unique. If you’re ever in a Spanish-speaking country during the Christmas season, be sure to try one (or a few!) of these delicious sweets. What can I use to mold Polvoron? Step 5: Divide the crumbly polvoron dough into different bowls, based on the number of flavors you want to make.
