I was absolutely blown away by the artistic yet abstract prose, which was clearly thought out with the utmost strategy to define these characters' personalities despite the whirlwind of their drink and drug-fuelled lives. This is definitely a book that makes you want to put pen to paper and recount your own stories.

It’s great that more light is being shed on this major – weirdly uncharted – part of so many women’s lives. Friendships are often the most complex relationships of our life, and yet aren’t given the same milestones and social kudos as romantic or sexual relationships. I’ve had many female friends who were closer than lovers; certainly many female friendships that lasted a lot longer than relationships with men. There were many that felt deep and nourishing, many that felt exciting and Thirty, many that felt like home. In writing about friendship, I wanted to honour all of them. Writing that article felt like cathartic thing to do. The way I process the world is through words, I could not write for a long time when I was suffering badly, I could not string a sentence together.

Fight or Flight" – Murmurations: An Anthology of Uncanny Stories About Birds (Two Ravens Press, 2011, ISBN 978-1-906120-59-7) I also wanted to peer into what happens when these fundamental relationships go wrong. If we are to give friendship its due as being equal to romantic or sexual love, we have to say it can be as heartbreaking, too. I was completely confused by my feelings about the break-up with my old Mancunian bestie. Sadly, I was too young and inexperienced to know what I needed and could ask for. Maybe that friendship could have been better if I’d known myself more and spoken up. Or maybe it ran its course. It wasn’t as if we had a showdown; more that we drifted and fizzled out. She didn’t like my choice of boyfriend, but we never talked properly about why. Then, one night, she left my flat after an awkward dinner and I knew that was it.

I have just finished 'Animals,' and have to say I was quite disappointed. Aside from finding a couple of typos and grammatical errors in the book, which one is one of my biggest pet peeves, I found it took far too long to introduce some real substance. It's not a great example to set for young people for sure, and it well deserves its UK15 certificate. With its drug taking, heavy drinking and casual (and morally bankrupt) sex, if I was on the BBFC I would have be lobbying for an 18 certificate. Fearn, Catherine (17 October 2011). And, to make it worse, nothing specific has triggered such a life changing moment, other than the fact you’ve both drifted apart.

I’m still tired, I have got a toddler now and still have a bad night’s sleep now and then. Sleep deprivation means I will struggle with my mental health massively."

Animals review – tragicomic ode to growing up disgracefully

I have to admit that I really didn't enjoy this film. I'm sure it's technically very strong - with great cinematography and (at times) thoughtful script. But I had absolutely no empathy with any of the characters involved. They were driftless individuals leading vacuous hedonistic lives. I just wanted to shake them by the shoulders and shout in their faces "Are you going to be happy with what you've done in your life on your death bed?" So, I finally read this, after two years of it hovering near the top of my to-read list. It's hard to explain why I didn't make a stab at it before now - something to do with the weight of expectation, I suppose, and perhaps something to do with feeling I needed to be in the right mood or frame of mind. In any case, a holiday seemed like perfect timing. I thought, after all this waiting, I might merely like it, which was in itself a dismaying prospect, but no, I loved it. Here's what I wrote in my holiday notebook:It is the moment every twenty-something must the time to grow up. Adulthood looms, with all it's numbing tranquility and stifling complacency. The end of prolonged adolescence is near.

How different the winding, stony path of the morning to the straight, solid road of the night. The sky was pigeon grey. The way the day begins decides the shade of everything. We disembarked at Manchester just before nine. On the platform my every step felt like a decision. I was full of spinning magnets, attracting and repelling their own poles : walk, sleep, drink, call, don’t call, eat, sit down, don’t sit down. Really enjoyed the style of writing, and found parts of it incredibly relatable (in a bad way). If you have been a teenager/university student in the UK then the drinking culture and relentless going out portrayed here along with the things Tyler and Lo get up to may hit a bit close to home, albeit a bit more extreme than my own experience. She has also worked as a journalist and is a former columnist for The Big Issue in the North. Hyde said that it was the book which drew her in and inspired her to make the film, giving voice to women's experiences in a way that she had not seen very often on screen and in a way that felt connected to her own experience. She and Unsworth worked collaboratively from early in the creative process. [3] The film was made in and around Dublin, whereas the book is set in Manchester. [3]
